That’s it, I frown slightly, shifting in my seat. “Why not?” Now he looks at me, a beat, then he says the most scarier thing. “I see ghosts at night.” My stomach drops. “…What?” His face stays completely straight, for a second, I actually believe him. Then, he lets out a soft low laugh. “Relax,” he says. “I’m kidding.” I exhale sharply, narrowing my eyes at him. “That’s not funny.” “It was a little funny.” “It wasn’t.” He leans back slightly in his chair, studying me for a second like he’s memorizing the reaction.

She instantly widened her eyes, terror evident in her eyes as a scream escaped her lip jumping towards my direction. Unable to hold it any longer, I burst out laughing, throwing my head back as the laugh flowed freely from my throat. Finally realizing I was joking, she glared at me, her green eyes filled with rage. “Why must you always do that? You know I'm scared of ghosts." “They are not real," I replied nonchalantly. “Even if they were, they can't do anything to you, a living being. Only if you do something to them first and besides, you got me." I said my voice was laced with mockery.

If I had to guess, they probably didn’t get very many visitors down here. “Usss too.” It said back to me, and I swore I could hear a hint of sadness in the piercing voice. The answer left me confused, and even more shaken than I already was. These were the beings my village told ghost stories about. Horrible, malformed, and endlessly vicious creatures that had tried to kill their own mothers. They were the things that went bump in the night, and attacked without a second thought. What would they have to be scared of?

Aina pov: It has Been almost a month since I had the scary encounter with a ghost at the River Elbe, this ghost claimed to be my mother. I don't have the gut to tell my aunt Ella about the encounter. I know she will ask me why I visited the river Elbe. I could still recall having a dream about the same ghost lady that night when I was sleeping. In this dream, she was clothed in normal clothes and her skin was fresh without any scars or wounds.

By now, we’ve all had more than a few drinks, and we’re halfway between tipsy and passed out. “Let’s tell scary stories,” Laura, one of my friends, suggests. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Kara asks. “These woods are spooky at night. I have to be able to sleep, you know.” “Maybe we should call one of those hunky forest rangers for you,” I suggest with a laugh. “He’d better bring a friend,” Laura says. “Or twelve,” Diana, another friend of mine, adds. We all laugh, and Laura starts in on the first story about night walkers, ghostly figures who march through the forest.

When I turned back around, I noticed a new note pinned to the table. It was the same familiar handwriting, but the strokes seemed to carry a hint of chill this time. "Squanderer." I froze, then started laughing out loud. So this ghost couldn't just cook—she was also a thrifty, budget-conscious woman. I liked that. I immediately grabbed a pen and wrote back, "Sorry, Ivy. I was just joking. From now on, let's stick to regular dishes. I won't bring up such ridiculous things anymore." I made sure to apologize sincerely.

With a click, the clasp came undone, and the pendant fell to the floor. In a flash, Zoe’s eyes widened. She grabbed my collar like a madwoman. “Y-You… You didn’t switch fates?
