The drive back from the marina was conducted in a heavy, strained silence. Cami sat in the back of the SUV with Ariana, her hand tightly gripping Ariana’s as if she were afraid her friend might vanish if she let go. Mateo drove, his eyes fixed on the road, his reflection in the rearview mirror a constant, watchful presence. When they finally entered the foyer of the mansion, the festive Christmas decorations—the towering tree, the garlands, the flickering candles—seemed mocking. Is there such a thing?” “It’s not a phobia. It’s a trauma you’ll recover from.” Kate chuckled and gulped down more coffee. “When I was five, my dad faked Santa. He bought a cheap costume that made him look like a Halloween ghost. My head was by the window and I was sleeping. I woke up suddenly to the frightening image of him reaching for my head. He was only trying to drop a Christmas gift but I never recovered. The doctors said it was a trauma I would recover from. I never did.”

As for Jack, he stood some distance away from all of them. Father asked Anne to needle the tip of her index finger and put the dripping blood into a small bowl of water. Father then recited spell after spell, and was greeted by the sect members who repeated the incantation while raising their hands and walking around them. A moment later, Anne felt that her head was hurting terribly. She couldn't help it and screamed out loud. Her eyes began to turn white and blood came out of her nose. So he has thousands of helpers who go out and collect the letters and dress up like him to find out what pups want for Christmas!”

I said nonchalantly and Nanny Agatha frowns, “Isn’t he too old to marry a young beautiful girl?” “No Nanny! Santa Clause is not old! He is young. He never gets old. He has told me.” After pausing for a minute I ask Nanny Agatha, “Tell me Nanny Agatha, if Santa grows old then why his pictures of this year shows the same Santa as few years back?”

“Oh my God.” My father sounded smug now. “Exactly. So clean up your attitude before you get here.” “I—” A voice crackled softly through my headphones behind me. Low. Calm. Familiar. “Ivy.” My blood froze. Slowly, I turned back toward my laptop s creen. The livestream was still running. The masked man sat motionless in the darkness. Watching me.
