My aunts look at my mother with a small smile and then back at me.
"It's just a joke Fernando told," Aunt Margarita replies with a soft smile. "Tell him, let's go," she asks Fernando.
I try to deny it and say it's unnecessary, but they don't seem to listen.
"Well, a Mexican farmer was showing off his pepper plantation to a tourist," she begins, stifling a laugh. The tourist, seeing the red, fiery peppers, asked, "How do you know when the peppers are ready to harvest?" And then the farmer replied, "It's simple. If you bite into one and it cries, it's ready. If you bite into it and it cries, you better wait a little longer." He says, laughing, as if it were so funny his lips could split.
