It was a text, not a news article. When she saw who the text was from, a deep frown marred her face and she regretted opening the message in the first place. It was a text from Matt, her blackmailer, which read: “Don’t forget our deal, dear Charlotte. I’ve decided to extend the time for you to get my money, since you and your husband keep getting into trouble on your own. Don’t ever think I’m going to back down from my threats. If you don’t pay me what I asked, I’ll release the pictures as promised.”

My hands were slightly clammy, probably from all this damn clownery. “It’s a string of messages. Weird ones. From an unknown number.” “What is this?” “I’ve been getting texts like this for a while. At first, I didn’t think much of them, I get a lot of shit like this. They started sending weird messages about you, but I thought it was a bluff.” “All the other ones I get…” My fingers shook as I scrolled deeper. The messages looked harmless at first, mostly hellos and someone asking how his wife was doing. And then it changed. They were talking about things they planned to do to said wife… which I’m assuming was me.

We both laughed at that… not loud or long, but deep enough to loosen something tight in my chest. I reached for my phone, more out of habit than anything. Notifications lined the screen like tiny red warnings. But there was one text message that wasn't there before and it was from the same unknown sender from last time. It was honestly becoming draining. The contents of the message was a chilling line: Be careful not to share a meal with the devil.

A text message from an unfamiliar number appeared on the screen. “Xyla Quest, you b*tch. I will never let you off the hook.
