I could feel his hand brushing mine once and it was enough to send that familiar warmth through me.
We stopped at the edge of the driveway. Kyle crouched slightly, peering toward the windows of the house. His sharp eyes scanned every angle, the dim alley beside the gate, the shadows under the trees. I followed his gaze, instinctively checking for what he was looking for, then I realised he was watching if anyone was watching us
But nobody was and there was nothing. Kyle exhaled softly. "Safe," he muttered, more to himself than to me.
I nodded, my heart thudding in my chest. I had to focus. The moment, the distance, the way the world seemed to hold its breath around us, it all mattered.
