When the last shell hit the floor, the silence that followed was deafening.

She slid to a stop, whirling around as three shadows reached toward her. She backed away from the men, groping in the side pocket of the bag for the gun. Her father had spoke of the me-or-them mindset before. The mentality that allowed soldiers to fire without guilt because someone was going to die. And she didn't want it to be her. Hannah pulled the gun out, firing blind. The men dove out of the way, throwing themselves into garbage and against the walls. The bullet sent up sparks and bits of stone from where it hit the ground just in front of them.

I've run from death every day, maybe it's time to let it happen. Getting shot by a school shooter is a better way of going out than being tortured to death by my father. "I'm sure this is someone from the deal that fell through. I knew they would come for revenge, I didn't think it would be while I'm at school." Alec whispers in my ear, his breath causing goosebumps to rise on my neck. I shiver as I remember the faces of the men that were eyeing me that night. They looked scruffy, but I could tell they meant business. I still remember the feeling of their blood lust, they wanted to kill us the mere second we stepped into the building.

Don took a deep breath, then in one swift motion he fired back, his bullet arrowing through the air as he took down another target. The shooter fell backward into the shadows, his body sliding off the metal ladder with a clang. The fog around the district thickened making shooting all the more harder. Damian’s pulse stayed steady as he moved low and fast between containers, firing in short bursts. Another gunman emerged from behind a shipment crate, shouting something in Italian before firing wildly. Damian ducked instinctively rolling to the floor and then came up firing. He shot two bullets, both straight through the chest of the man.

“How are you doing? How’s school?” What is really there to tell? “Same old. Same old.” I shrug. And then, Aiden and I say goodbye to my dad. I’m still waving when the gunshot comes. It tears through the air, making a clean shot in my chest. I think it’s a joke. A trick of the light. There’s no way I have been shot. There’s no way the blood coating my chest is actually mine. I collapse but Aiden catches me. He’s yelling a bunch of words in my face but I don’t hear them. My dad appears a moment later.

Amy wanted to turn to the door, but she couldn’t move. “Believe it or not, all of those other people inside my video game were my victims. I even took one of my victims and made her the president of the United States. I also based the game farther into the future. I know it’s the year 2098, but you see inside my game, I made it the year 2130. When you think about it, my so-called victims are still alive but only in my video game. So that means I’ve killed nobody.” The gunman leaned back, releasing an explosive chuckle. He laughed so intensely that veins bulged out of his wide neck. The gunman didn’t laugh too hard because he almost dropped a switchblade concealed in his hands.

The intense sound of gunfire, like deafening thunder, instantly swept over the entire school. This sudden development frightened all the parents and children present, leaving many of them pale-faced. Some of them even burst into tears. Mr. Reynolds,being closest to Liam,felt the heat emanating from the gun muzzles in front of him. His face turned ashen, and cold sweat broke out on his forehead. The deafening gunfire rang in Mr. Reynolds's ears, and the realization hit him like a ton of bricks—they were real soldiers with real guns.
