After the boys had left my room, I went through my bag and pulled out my favorite book, Night Flame, by Catherine Hart. I sat back in my chair by the window, prepared to spend the rest of the afternoon reading when a shiver ran down my spine. I jumped out of my seat and spun around to see a pair of yellow eyes glowing in the corner of the room. As those eyes drew closer to me, I realized that it was Simon, the fae that came to warn me the other day.

She kind of looked like a demon. Carefully as not to startle her, he settled on the opposite side of their table and asked in a low voice, "What are you looking for?" The books she stacked on the table caught his attention. "'The Expanded History of Death'," he read the titles aloud, "'Funerals through the Ages'. 'Life after Death: the Existence of the Afterlife'. His presence was tense, as if he was waiting for something to move in the shadows. “Black magic,” he murmured, reaching for a book with gold-edged pages. The cover had a strange sigil, one that pulsed faintly under the dim lighting. I frowned. “This place… it doesn’t feel right.” It wasn’t just the books. There were jars placed on a nearby table—each containing murky liquids and unidentifiable objects floating within. Some looked like dried-up hearts, others like small, shriveled hands. I swallowed hard. Hades exhaled sharply. “It’s worse than I expected.”

I read the titles out loud. “The Devil in Silver by Victor LaValle. The October Country by Ray Bradbury. Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes. Last Days by Brian Evenson.” I curl up my lip in disgust. “This is your reading style?” I frown. He glances up. “I like horror.” I widen my eyes. “Boring.” His jaw ticks in annoyance. “What do you like to read?” I purposely bend over, revealing my naked ass. “I like raunch.”

“They don’t like it when I say I’ve already been there.” “Hard to go somewhere you don’t believe in.” He mused. “True statement.” She agreed. “I pulled a few books for you. Don’t feel like you have to all of them. Or even any of them.” “I appreciate this. I’m not sure what to think about all of this.” “The woman? The feelings you have? Or the gifts she has?” Giving her a wry smile, he asked, “Do I have to pick just one?” “Absolutely not.” Ciara shuffled the books and pulled one out, handing it over. “This one is about ghosts. I also pulled a few about white covens.”

Agatha said briskly. The reality of the situation suddenly sank in. Fear consumed Edwin and his heart threatened to explode in his chest as he rushed to join Tim behind the thick oak tree. “Are you out of your mind?” Tim hissed when his friend skidded next to him. “I think so,” Edwin panted. “I can’t believe any of this is happening. Vampires… witches… this is like some sci-fi nightmare,” Tim complained. “It was supposed to be a simple hunting trip with a few friends.”

We were almost two hours in the massive Library but I only read a forbidden book about magic. "Yeah. This Book of Morgue matched the things that Doctor Zahard said to me."
