I lunged from the brush, knife flashing. The blade sank into his shoulder. He howled, snapping at me, but I was already moving. Another strike to the throat. He dropped, gurgling, dead before he hit the ground. The scouts reacted instantly. Shouts. Steel drawn. Kael was already on them, a whirlwind of speed and violence. I didn’t hesitate. I moved. One scout came at me, sword raised. I ducked low, swept his legs, and drove my knife into his thigh.

He adjusted the scope slightly. Trying to find another angle. But the child stayed too close. Then— The boy kissed Trisha’s cheek. The sniper froze. His eye focused on the boy’s face. And his pupils suddenly shrank. “…Wait.” The sniper leaned closer to the scope. Studying the child. Dark hair. Sharp eyes. That expression— “No shot tonight.” Within seconds, the weapon disappeared into a long black case. “I need to report to boss.” The shadow behind the window vanished.

Some kind of gravity urges me to lean into him, but I don’t dare. Eventually, he clears his throat and meets my eyes again. “When we scout, we go in pairs,” he says. “We could do that. We could be scouts together.” I understand what he’s saying. If we’re going to do this—and we have to do this—it can’t be like before. There can’t be a bad guy. So we’ll be in it together. “Okay. How do scouts work?” Some tension leaves his body. “Well, usually, one of us keeps an eye out for threats while the other looks for signs of prey.”

She hated feeling useless as a sniper. The weaponsmith took a look at Sasha’s slime boss lungs and raised a monocle. “I’ve never heard of that kind of weapon. What’s a sniper rifle?” Sasha lifted her shotgun and explained once more. “It has a scope here to allow me to zoom in on something that far away,” she pointed at a fruit several buildings from where the weaponsmith’s shop was. “It would look as if it was right in your hand in the scope, and I can shoot multiple times before needing to reload. Also, the gun has a sling so that I can carry it on my back and run.”

His hazel eyes met Hunter’s, relaying a calm professionalism he appreciated. He’d worked with Scout/Snipers in the field before and had found them to be some of the best in the world. Ellis’s expertise allowed them much more operational latitude and flexibility, which Hunter considered invaluable. She muttered as she aligned the criss cross mark of her sniper scope to the head of the terrorist with the gun. She held her breadth and pulled the trigger at the same time when he raised his rifle to shoot the third captive. The gun fell from his hand first before the man followed. There was panic amongst the other two who looked around in confusion. One of the men made a dash to the fallen weapon of his comrade but she followed him swiftly, the criss cross mark of her sniper moving behind her new target till her focus point was centered on his chest, then she pulled the trigger. A second later, the man was flying backwards in the air before landing on the floor motionless.

Coco went to a knee beside him. "Our job. You're my lookout." Paxton hadn't brought his sniper gear with him, but he'd make do with their standard issue rifle. "But we're up here." He turned his head and even with the mask obscuring her features he could see the frown lines, the glare. "I'm a sniper. This is what I do best." He reached up and tapped the comm. "Team Leader in position. Sound off." One by one the four teams chimed in. "I cannot believe this," Coco muttered.
