No answer. A shape shifted in the corner of the room too fast, too dark to be human. Her body tensed. A sweet, sharp scent filled the air with sedative herbs laced with shadow magic. She moved toward the cradle, but a cloth clamped over her mouth before she could scream. Her last sight before darkness swallowed her was of the balcony, the moon’s light flickering like a dying flame. Sebastian returned moments later, his senses on high alert. He’d found nothing, no intruder, no sound but the crackle of torches. The guard claimed to have dropped a tray, nothing more. He opened the door to their room and froze.
