“Can you grab my comb please?” I walk over to the desk he’s using as a temporary vanity in our semi-finished bedroom and collect his seashell comb, and for the first time notice a peculiar block of stone resting on top of some office papers. It looks old and I can’t tell what kind of stone it is, but it appears to have some kind of glyphs on it. It immediately reminds me of the Rosetta Stone, but we all know it’s not that. “What’s this?” I ask, gesturing to the large stone.

Alex walked up to the stones and picked out the three that had caught his eye. One was a larger piece while the other two were smaller. The large one was as big as a bench. While the other two were the sizes of basketballs. Tobias was fairly obsessed with stone gambling. However, as Alex picked out the stones, he shook his head and approached him. “Mr. Rockefeller, these three ores don’t look so good. There’s a low chance that you’d be in the green with these. Why don’t you choose some other ones? I’ve gambled quite a few times, I might be of help.”

His thick eyebrows were furrowed deep on his forehead as he scrambled over the piles of documents scattered on the floor. Leaning over the table stacked with books and papers of different sorts, he scooped down and held a tiny gray creature with big round eyes and yellow irises. The creature's body was slime-like, yet it seemed to have short limbs and a small mouth that produces a harsh hissing sound when it opens.

The moss at their bases seemed to grow lusher, greener. Lyra, who was stacking pebbles nearby, looked up and giggled. "The baby is talking to the stones!" And she was right. The unborn child, with no conscious thought, was communicating. It was a wordless feeling of contentment, of belonging, of thanks for the safe, warm nest of its mother's body and the strong, humming presence of its stone "grandmothers."
