To have a full moon for your first shift means the Moon Goddess is looking out for you. While it was painful and not something I ever want to go through again, my first shift went faster than I thought. Your body is not used to shifting, and the first one is always the worst. Every bone in your body breaks; fur grows out of your skin, and it can take thirty minutes to an hour to shift. Once you’ve done it, shifting becomes easier. Not that it still not painful, but less. "You see shifting is a process, there's a beginning, a middle, and an end, but between the middle and the end of the process there's a stage that can be reached and kept in a form that would be more suitable for you." She said and Oli caught on to what she was saying. "So I'd still be standing upright but have some of my fox features?" He asked, "Yes, you'd keep your tail, your eyes, and your ears. Each time I tried to shift, it took more effort, more focus, and it hurt more. I gritted my teeth as I felt the familiar, brutal pull begin. My bones started contorting, reshaping with jarring cracks. I bit down on the urge to cry out. It wasn’t supposed to be this painful. My skin stretched, my limbs reformed, and I dropped to all fours. This was only my second full shift and I expected it to be excruciatingly painful like it was in the woods, but it wasn't. Oh for sure it hurt like a bitch every time one of my bones snapped and broke, but by the time the bone had reshaped itself and set again in its new place, the pain was gone. This shift took less than 60 seconds. I'd watched many of Tristan's pack shift, and Landon was the fastest shifter they had, but even he took longer than 2 minutes to fully shift. I guess the hunter side of me sped up the process, whatever the reason I damn well loved it. His bones began cracking as Creed pulled a shift, which was nearly instantaneous. Wow! That was fast.

I asked "I have been shifting for years, and it's only the first shift that takes some time" he replied making me nod my head in understanding "You didn't look like you were in pain" I said and he chuckled a little "It is because you don't feel pain when you shift after the first few times" he replied with a smile "Don't worry, you will feel a little soreness when you shift the next time, you won't feel so much pain" he assured and I sighed in relief

I turned another heavy page, and a highly detailed sketch of a human mid-transformation forced me to stop breathing. "Oh my god," I whispered, staring at the horrific illustration of bones snapping and reforming under stretched skin. "What now?" Connor demanded, his patience wearing dangerously thin. "There is a drawing of the actual shifting process, and the anatomical notes describe the exact amount of pain the subject endures during the transition," I explained, feeling a phantom ache in my own joints. "The text says the first shift is triggered by extreme emotional distress or severe bodily trauma, and the subject relies on the pack Alpha to anchor their mind," I read the chilling facts

Drake has mind-linked me to ask if I was alright. I nodded that I was fine, I needed to relax some more and remember what it was like the first time I shifted. I started to sweat as my body worked at making the shift. First my hands grew hair and were starting to shift. I could feel my spine snapping into place as my snout grew out. The spine was the most painful part and took longer than I anticipated. We were almost done, just a couple more adjustments and I will have survived the first shift.
