I turned another heavy page, and a highly detailed sketch of a human mid-transformation forced me to stop breathing. "Oh my god," I whispered, staring at the horrific illustration of bones snapping and reforming under stretched skin. "What now?" Connor demanded, his patience wearing dangerously thin. "There is a drawing of the actual shifting process, and the anatomical notes describe the exact amount of pain the subject endures during the transition," I explained, feeling a phantom ache in my own joints. "The text says the first shift is triggered by extreme emotional distress or severe bodily trauma, and the subject relies on the pack Alpha to anchor their mind," I read the chilling facts

It's hard to believe that the rumors are true, but people don't know the half of it. Ambrose is sitting in his usual spot, eating his breakfast absently as I come in. "Morning," I say, taking my seat beside him. He grins at me. "You're feeling better?" "So is your thing," I say gesturing to him. "Is it like a full moon thing? You can only shift under the full moon?" Ambrose laughs and the sound lifts my heart higher. "No. I can shift whenever I choose. The need to shift is stronger with the changes of the moon, but they aren't linked together."

I grab a handful of grass and dirt instead. "ahhhhhh," Shannon screams before she twists on the ground. I grind my teeth as my chest feels like it's being ripped apart. "AHHHHH," Shannon screams again, and I squeeze my eyes shut. "Fuck," I grunt, and my spine twists. I have always known shifting for the first time would be painful, but I never imagined this. "Ahh, oh fuck," I yell before grinding my teeth together. The pain within my body suddenly triples and every bone in my body feels as if it's breaking. I scream out just as Shannon does. But just when I think I might die, the pain stops. Everything stops. The pain and the heat disappears.

He knows what pain I have to go through again. I whimpered. The first time hurts and the next will too. I haven't gotten used to it since I only change once. Ryder was already used to it. My friends said that the more you shift the lesser the pain you will feel. I played on the grass. I was getting ready to shift but I was shaking. I didn't want to feel my bones breaking. How my body burned from my inside and out. How my teeth sank back into my gums. My claws crawling back as my body shifts.

Drake has mind-linked me to ask if I was alright. I nodded that I was fine, I needed to relax some more and remember what it was like the first time I shifted. I started to sweat as my body worked at making the shift. First my hands grew hair and were starting to shift. I could feel my spine snapping into place as my snout grew out. The spine was the most painful part and took longer than I anticipated. We were almost done, just a couple more adjustments and I will have survived the first shift. I push the shift forward as I keep moving us towards the sound, I get to the treeline just as the shift takes over. Blinding pain fills all my senses. I push the pain away in my mind and see the road. It's a small road weaving through the dense forest. I'm blinded again as pain eats away at me. This is bad, worse than the first time we shifted to keep Krauft away from beating Evie for growling. Bones snap and shift. Our face morphs. Teeth and claws grow and hair starts to sprout. I can feel the end of the shift nearing as I hear a car approach. And then black.

The palms of my hand rest on the soft fabric beneath our feet, but my claws break through, and I can feel the cushion deep within. My leg hits the side of his knee, causing him to buckle, and lose that strong stance he took. He tries to catch himself from falling as I twist my body back up, lifting my knee high, making contact with his chin. His body begins to fly backwards. I grabbed both of his arms, pulling them out, separating them from each other as I pulled him back up towards me,

"Ms. Beast is tired of you wasting time." "You call her Ms. Beast?" he asks with a grin. I lift my hands and shrug. "You have your word and I have mine. Are we getting on with this or what?" The frustration in my voice should tip him off that I no longer want to talk. He cocks his head. "You realize you could shift while mating." "What?" No way, absolutely not! "It's rare. With you newly changed you need to be aware of it." "It won't happen." Crap, it better not. The short hair that covers my body when I shift will take "I must shave my legs to be with a guy" to an entirely new level. No snouts, no big teeth, and definitely no hair.
