You can’t just discount discomfort.” I took her wrist and gently moved it away from my neck. “How about I try to make dinner and you tell me about how this whole thing works.” Her eyebrow went up. “Did you…did you not learn about shifting?” Pulling out a knife and cubing up the spam, I laughed. “I mean, you kind of tend to tune out things you don’t think you’re ever going to need. Plus, when everyone around us was shifting, we were pretty much on lock down to make sure we wouldn’t. Since it’s not a birthday thing, Father thought we might shift past the inhibitor.”

‘I wish to meet Karica and Minerva,’ Zilver chimed in my brain. ‘Shift.’ “Zilver wants to meet both of you. I will shift now,” I told Karica and her face brightened. Stripping down I shifted into Zilver, my bones shortened and lengthened at the same time. Zilver ambled over to our mate and Karica held Minerva to him. He sniffed her and let out a low howl of his approval.

I called Aster forward and prepared to shift. I’d turned eighteen a month ago and had been shifting ever since, but the memory of the pain of my first time still lingered slightly, making me brace myself. His smile turned to one of concern and his face became serious. “What do you mean? You said you never got the shifting gene, so you can’t be seventeen.” My eyes widened at his words. That wasn’t what we were told in school. My voice started to come out shaky as thoughts began racing through my mind. “What are you talking about? That’s basic shifting. We learn that as children when we start school. If a Shifter has not transformed by their sixteenth birthday, then it means the shifting gene is absent, and they were cursed to live as humans.
