SERENA’s POV There I was,thinking my first blind date ever was perfect. My date for the evening, John was smiling sweetly at me and then his eyes suddenly widened with panic. He leaned in, whispering urgently, "Serena, duck under the table! Quick!" Confused and alarmed, I stammered, "What? Why? What's happening?" Before he could respond, a woman stormed into the restaurant and scanned the place. In an instant, he confessed in hushed tones, "That's my crazy ex-wife. We're going through a messy divorce. Please, just duck under the table. I don't want her to see us together.She can’t see me here!”

I’d gotten used to being invisible long before Serena came to live with us when we were ten. Serena was half succubus and half siren. She had amazing blue eyes that sparkled with purple streaks bursting from her pupil and, tonight, was wearing her glossy, dark chocolate brown hair in a braid down her back. It was easy to see she wasn’t exactly into the idea of going to this bar.

Not yet. Serena twists violently in his grasp, her desperation mounting with every passing second. "This isn't about clans or species!" she cries out, her voice breaking. "This is about you controlling every aspect of my life. When will you see me as my own person?" Her curly blonde hair whips around her face, her eyes ablaze with defiance. But her father's grip remains unyielding. A sudden movement from the side catches my attention. Serena's mother, Eleanor, steps forward, her chin lifted high, her expression as sharp as a dagger. The moonlight highlights the streaks of silver in her dark hair.

Serena comes up to her, and pulls her to one side, making Eliza roll her eyes again. “What’s up, sis? I’m kind of in the middle of a thing here.” She waves the rest of them on. Serena waits for them to all be in the room with the door closed. “What? You’re worrying me.” She looks her in the eyes. Serena is four-seven, a slim woman with a large chest. Tight blonde curls that fall just past her shoulders, sharp features, a small pointed nose, and large almond-shaped eyes, that were bright blue and glowing gently. She’s biting her full lips, then sighs. “Charlie.” Eliza nods, “I know you know that something’s up, but she won’t tell me either.” Eliza nods,

Serena said slowly, “that fate is giving me a second chance.” “To do what?” Bianca asked cautiously. Serena smiled. Not sweetly. Not kindly. But promising. “To conclude what was left unfinished.” Later that night, Serena met Bianca in a private lounge downtown. The lighting was dim, exclusive, expensive. No one listened. No one interfered. Bianca sat opposite her, feeling nervous. “You didn't tell Ethan, right?” Serena scoffs: "Of course not." "What if he finds out?" “He won’t,” Serena said calmly. “Not yet.”

“Noted. Now stop talking like someone’s grandma.” The gym smells like sweat and coconut hair mist, and the echo of thudding sneakers bounces off the high ceiling. There's music blaring from portable speakers, something with a heavy beat that sounds more like a battle anthem than a pep song. And then—bam—one of the girls launches into a standing backflip like gravity doesn’t exist. Just casual. My jaw drops. “What the hell was that?” “That,” Blaire says with a wink, “was Serena. Co-captain. And yes, her I*******m is terrifying.”

The brightest star beside him would always be Serena. I existed only as the dark background that made the two of them shine. Over the following weeks, I traveled through unfamiliar places and slowly let my worries fall away. Adrian occasionally found new numbers from which to message me. He told me that he and Serena had gone to the French restaurant where we used to have our dates. He told me he had fired Serena and wanted to apologize in person. He told me he was miserable and asked whether I would come back to see him. I never answered. I simply blocked each new number.

“Who said that?” Serena averted her eyes, but I forced her to keep looking at me. She shook her head softly with teary eyes. “In the end, we won't be able to be together, sir. I have a problem with my parents. Your concern is with your ex-wife. I don't think we'll ever solve this if one of us doesn't compromise.” I moved to sit in front of her and held her shoulders. “Serena, we haven't even started yet, and you've already given up. I promised I would always stand by you and be the strongest bulwark to defend you from your parents' selfishness.”

the way he stood tall in the blue jersey he was wearing made me lower my face and shake the thoughts off from my mind, the thoughts where he would hug me after practices and kiss my cheek. He had his hair wet from all the sweat and exertion. His breathing was also loud, which kind of made him look scarier. “Seren--,” I haven’t even pronounced her name when a kid from the school obtruded us. “Serena has fallen off the stairs,” The call for attention worked. Not only Daxon, but I rushed to hear the news. My body fell off the stairs. What has she done?

“She smells of Rhys. They’re working together.” I muttered a curse under my breath, my thoughts spinning. Elise and Rhys—a paired vipers, ready to strike, each for their own reasons to watch me fall. And Serena collateral damaged. I looked at her once more, and she looked back, and her gaze was level and unafraid. She took a step forward and her very presence filled the room in a way that left even Torren feeling off balance. “I want to say something,” Serena said, her voice distinct, slicing through the tension. “If I’m the source of this division, then let me heal it.”
