“You think it’s him?” “I don’t think,” she replied softly. “I know.” The first howl split through the air then distant, ragged, too distorted to belong to any living wolf. It was followed by another, closer, and then the tree line erupted in chaos. The Shadowborn had come. They poured from the forest like living nightmares wolves that looked half-rotten, their eyes black and their mouths dripping with dark ichor. Their bodies moved wrong, their limbs bending at impossible angles. The stench of decay rolled with them, making the Ironfang warriors gag as they rushed to arm themselves.

The library descends into an uncomfortable silence, one I'm itching to break but I don't say anything, patiently waiting for him to speak. “Did you see the rift?” I nod. “It wasn't there when I left.” “And it's just the beginning. Even before you left, the shadows in our realm had intensified but we've been able to keep them at bay and prevent things from escalating. And now we have rifts.” Leaning back on his couch, fatigue washing over his face, he sighs, “Who knows what else will come? The human realm is collapsing, so is our realm but at a more obvious level.”

Before she could pull away fully, a hand clamped around her ankle and wrenched he pulled her out of the narrow shadow into the open, where there was nowhere left to hide. “You bitch really thought you fooled me?” he roared.

"The forest bound you to loss. I can free you, you will get the black book, Luca could be your husband again and you will be in your son's life." Her throat tightened. "Free me?" "Yes." The shadow slithered closer, its form neither man nor beast but something older, deeper. "I can return him to you. Your son. Whole, alive, yours again. No curse. No chains." Bianca's breath hitched. The offer was everything her bones ached for. But she wasn't naive. "What do you want in return?" The shadow's smile widened. "Service. Loyalty. A vow written in your blood. I am the keeper of the Black Book, and I require hands in this world. You, Bianca, will be my hand. My voice. My weapon."
