Beside him, the Shadow-Shell array hummed with a low-frequency vibration, its cooling fans struggling against the humid air of the cabin. "We’re crossing the 6,000-meter mark," Jax whispered from the rear of the cabin, his hands moving across a portable terminal. "If there’s a leak in the seal, we won’t even feel it. We’ll just become part of the sediment before our brains can register the pressure."

A variety of a dozen or so tents litter the small clearing. A small group is gathered around a fire, far off to our right, on the edge of the clearing, consisting of three Omegas Cody, David and Tony, and an Elder, Alazaer. The Omegas are each holding a glass beer bottle and seem to be taking turns trying to get Alazaer to laugh. However, each time, he just raises a thick gray eyebrow at them with a blank and unamused expression on his tan wrinkled face.

Outside, the world was a nightmare of obsidian water and violet fire. Kazimir stepped onto the Dorsal Hull (the top surface of the submarine). Above him, seven miles of water pressed down with enough force to turn a tank into a pancake. His boots, equipped with Electromagnetic Soles (magnets used to lock a diver to a metal surface), clanked against the titanium skin of the Sparrow. "We’re passing 11,000 meters," Meilin reported, her voice steady despite the darkness outside the viewport. "The sonar isn't reflecting. It’s being absorbed."
