I sat at the small kitchen table, clutching my cup of cold coffee, staring at the leather-bound book *Reflections of the Forgotten* open before me. The stories inside weren’t just tales — they were warnings, lessons written in sorrow and hope. Women who had lived as shadows, trapped in lives borrowed from others, fighting to reclaim their own reflections.

KIRA The Hollow does not fight in daylight. We move in the hours when honest people sleep and the world is too dead to hear our steps. That night was no different. The air was cold, the sky dark and heavy. Our boots made no sound on the dirt. Our faces were hidden under black hoods smeared with ash. Serana said no one who survived would ever know who we were. It was meant to comfort us. It only made me feel smaller. Shame stuck to my skin like sweat.

The group staggered, struggling to keep their footing. “Keep moving!” Emma shouted, the key flaring in her hand. Its light cut through the darkness, momentarily forcing the shadows to recoil. “We can’t stop here!” The shadows surged forward again, their forms twisting and merging as they attacked. Vivienne struck swiftly with her dagger, each slash dispersing a shadow temporarily. Jamie swung his skateboard with surprising precision, scattering the smaller forms before they could solidify. “They’re endless!” Crane shouted, his voice strained as he tried to adjust the resonance map. “We need to destabilize them!”

It widened just enough for a person to slip through, revealing a narrow passage beyond that shouldn't have existed in the building's ancient architecture. Xalara hesitated only a moment before the first impact shook her door. She squeezed through the opening, which sealed seamlessly behind her, leaving no trace of its existence. The passage was pitch black, but the floor beneath her feet was smooth and sloped gently downward. She made her way blindly, guided by instinct more than thought, as the sounds of pursuit faded behind her. The air grew progressively cooler, with an earthy dampness that suggested she was descending below the slums, into foundations that predated even the oldest struct

But instead, I felt a warm, sticky substance wrap around me like a shroud. As I opened my eyes, I realized with a jolt of terror that I was swimming in a sea of blood. The liquid was thick and viscous, making every stroke feel like a struggle through quicksand. I tried to scream, but my voice was muffled by the blood, which seemed to be filling my lungs. I felt myself being pulled down, deeper into the crimson depths. As I descended, I saw twisted, nightmarish creatures lurking in the shadows. Their eyes glowed with an otherworldly light, and their skin seemed to shift and writhe like living darkness, Apex predators.

He opened the door and stepped into the shower where I was. "It must such being short." He smirked. "I'm fun sized, don't push it." "Fun sized?" He arched an eyebrow wickedly. "Yes I'm-" Before I could even continue I accidentally pushed the shower, turning it on on us. My eyes widened at the mistake as I watched how the water began to highlight the sculpts of his body through his light linen shirt even more than I could imagine. The blood ran down our clothing like the Niagara Falls as we stood there.

“Not in those shoes, though.” Kevin, Ethan, and I walked to the hole entrance and waited for the others, taking off their shoes. I tilted my head, peeking at the dark tunnel, scanning the place ahead, and checking if it was really safe for us to go inside. My eyes squinted, seeing slight movements from the inside. I was sure what my eyes were seeing. ‘Puppies!’

“Did the Shade escape?" Man made light couldn’t kill a shade, not like the UV rays of the sun, but it still produced an impenetrable barrier, so fending them off was as simple as keeping your lights turned on and avoiding dark corners. But a Shadow Man, someone who’d been taken by a shade? Sure, you could kill their human host as easily as the next human but that just forced the unharmed shade out of its dead flesh and into the next closes body. Yours.
