I kept walking toward the back wall then I saw something strange. A soft golden glow appeared between two massive bookshelves I walked past a thousand times. It was a hidden section. The books here looked ancient, their leather spines shimmering faintly. Titles like The Touch of Shadows, Bound by Moonlight, and Whispers After Dark seemed to pulse with their own light. My fingers trembled as I reached out and pulled one book from the shelf. It felt warm, almost alive. I was so curious to see so I opened it slowly.

The demon in me hoped she didn’t. That she was burning too. At dawn, I was back on duty. Transparent. Professional. A statue in a black suit standing watch in the entrance hall. My skull felt like an anvil, my eyes burned, but my posture was perfect. I am Liam Shae, the efficient shadow. Not the man who nearly lost himself in Diane’s forbidden light. Then she comes downstairs. And my world, already cracked, shatters into a thousand shards of silent pain. She is radiant.

For a moment, the smoke cleared—and Maya saw its face. Her own face stared back. Not the Maya in a torn coat, but a Maya with eyes like empty stars, a crown of black glass on her head. “Who are you?” Maya whispered, out of breath. “I’m the part of the story you tried to erase,” the shadow said. Her voice was Maya’s, only colder, more perfect. “I’m the ‘No’ to your ‘Yes.’ I’m the hunger you tried to call love.” The shadow stepped closer. The black chains pulsed with a sick light.

“You are not helping.” “I’m trying.” “You kissed me.” “You keep bringing that up.” “Because you kissed me.” The stunned disbelief in his voice almost made her laugh again. The mighty Shadow King truly could not recover from one kiss. Incredible. The bond warmed with sudden affection. Kael visibly felt it. And this time— Instead of retreating from the emotion— he stepped closer again. Slowly. Deliberately. Moonlight shifted softly across his face while shadows wrapped low around the floor beside them like restless living things.

Something flickered in his eyes, surprise, amusement, I wasn’t so sure. He took another step closer, towering over me with his crazy height. I subconsciously took a step back, suddenly feeling the need to run from his presence. He leaned in. “Sharp tongued huh? I wonder how long you can keep that up, with your pack’s life in line.” I shivered. “What?” My voice was barely a whisper, the loud pounding of my heart echoing in my ears. He smiled, stepping closer until the space between us vanished. “Now tell me,” He murmured, his breath brushing against my ear, “where is the Shadow Bride?”

As I approached the corner, I spotted the man leaning against a lamppost, his face obscured by the shadows. “Cassandra?” he asked, his voice low and rough. I nodded, keeping my distance. “You have it?” He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small, nondescript package, no bigger than a paperback book. “Same deal as always. No stops, no questions. Got it?” “Got it.” I stepped forward, taking the package from him. He lingered for a moment, his eyes scanning the street before nodding and disappearing into the shadows. I slipped the package into my bag and turned to leave, my heart already racing.

Could he dare hope that she would be warm and receptive? When he practically ran over her as she unexpectedly came out of a room without looking to see if there was anyone passing by, it stunned them both. The silence between them was deafening until Alison finally squealed with delight and flung her arms around his thick neck. Their kiss was both loving and desperate. “It’s kind of weird kissing you without matching bodies,” Alison said. “How do you like being in shadow land? I mean, with your lighter body and all,” Nick asked with mild amusement.

Shadow kissed her neck gently at first… then claimed her mouth with a slow, fierce hunger. The kiss was consuming, distracting, and utterly possessive, like he wanted to swallow every protest before she could even form it. Ruby yielded immediately. The burning intensity of Shadow’s mouth melted her resistance, her body softening against his as heat replaced every coherent thought.

Serena let out a soft gasp as his lips made contact with her collarbone and he kissed her all the way down to her cleavage. Shadow drew away for a moment, staring down into her eyes made him feel guilty for using her to release his anger, but he couldn't stop now, her arousal filled the room messing with his senses, her hands ran up his chest until they reached his head, her hands ran through his soft hair pulling him forward so they could continue their kiss.
