Even the crimson-robed auctioneer straightened slightly. From the far edge of the clearing, a figure stepped forward. Cloaked entirely in black. No visible insignia. No scent I could easily identify. That alone was unnatural. Every supernatural being carried a signature—wolf musk, vampire frost, witch spice. This one carried shadow. The lantern light seemed to bend around him instead of touching him. He did not raise his voice. He did not need to. “I will take her.” The words were calm, low, absolute. A hush fell over the clearing. The auctioneer cleared his throat. “Your bid?”

As the sun began to set, casting a warm golden hue over campus, Charlie, Maya, Ethan, and Liam gathered in their secret hiding place, the old abandoned hedge garden behind the science building. The air was thick with anticipation; they had been waiting for this moment for weeks. The four friends had been diligently gathering information about the plot against the werewolf king, and now they were ready to share their findings with Jessica.

“You’re not dreaming about monsters, little prince. You’re dreaming of me.” A shape appears beside me then—a shadow in the form of a man. Before she could pull away fully, a hand clamped around her ankle and wrenched he pulled her out of the narrow shadow into the open, where there was nowhere left to hide. “You bitch really thought you fooled me?” he roared.

For the first time in my life I knew I was about to lose someone again and I could not stop it. I looked at Rain standing there while Aaron moved toward her, and suddenly my body felt cold. Then everything changed. Darkness crept into the clearing. The ground beneath us trembled violently as black shadows spread everywhere like smoke crawling across the earth. Rain gasped. Aaron instantly stepped back. My eyes widened in shock. Shadow wolves - Kade's Shadow wolves. These creatures made entirely of darkness started slithering out from the shadows around us. Their glowing eyes locked onto Aaron instantly as low growls filled the clearing.

Iconic. Bukky ducked behind a forklift and returned fire, barking curses in Spanish as he clipped two more. “Cover right!” The Shadow King yelled, diving low. The fight was brutal, quick, but the Shadows were built for this. Shadows don’t blink. They don’t panic. And then, like thunder rolling in, their secret roared to life. Antonioni signaled. A whistling whine pierced the air thickly. From behind a metal crate, one of his boys hoisted it, and two controlled it from their ends.

The Shadows, ancient and mysterious, answered my summons, their dark energy swirling around me like a shroud. As The Shadows descended upon me, I felt an icy chill spread through my veins, a cold that was both biting and soothing. It was a sensation I had grown accustomed to over the centuries, one that signaled the arrival of these ancient, mystical entities. They seemed to emerge from every direction and none at all, their dark, ethereal forms slithering around my feet like living tendrils of night.

A little girl stood beneath a tree. She looked exactly like Elara. Clover rushed toward her. “My baby!” She reached for the child. But the girl smiled. Her eyes turned completely black. “You shouldn’t have come here.” Clover froze. The child transformed. It wasn’t Elara. It was the Void. Kael pulled Clover backward. “Don’t touch it!” The creature smiled. “Too late.” Black chains erupted from the ground. They wrapped around Clover’s legs. Kael slashed at them. They reformed immediately.

But when I open them again and look towards where he is, I still see black leather wings and crimson eyes. His fighting is even more impressive than what I’ve seen in Sahara’s gladiator ring. When the shadow aims some kind of power, he flies back, flips, and lunges at what I assume is its head. He flaps his wings, pushing the shadow back and aims his sword over it, cutting through it. He twirls again and piercing the center of the shadow over and over again until the shadow fractures and shatters into a million pieces. As soon as that happens, the fog fades, and the dark monster disappears, leaving the shadows of the true darkness behind.
