The syphia was one of the largest Vanadine had ever seen, roughly equivalent in height to a pony on Earth. Muscles rippled beneath its sleek, black and white fur and teeth peeled back from inch long fangs that would meet and cross in a scissoring action, rending flesh with ease. Eyes the colour of midnight skies regarded him with dispassionate hatred.

Aurora Wildheart sat at the scarred oak table, her silver-blue eyes scanning a detailed map of Nightshade’s western territory, where the stone circle for their ‘rite of binding’ lay. The cloaked figure’s eerie familiarity, Mara’s chilling message, ‘The Nightshade calls for the chosen… it showed me your face, Aurora’ and the whisper in her mind ‘The chosen will fall’ wove a tapestry of dread, intertwining with Vincent’s unsettling message: Trust your instincts. Her forbidden bond with the vampire liaison was a quiet anchor, yet the mystery of her lost past - before The Emerald Forest Pack took her in at seven - gnawed at her, amplified by the runes’ resonance and Mikhail’s cryptic scrutiny.

Deciding to be careful, I use a simple camouflaging charm over myself. It is a basic defensive charm, nothing like the Dark-Magic-fuelled Cloak that Ann and I used to hide from the assassins. The Cloak shrouds the person completely in darkness, rendering them totally invisible to prying eyes. But it can only be used at night, and it is powered by Dark Magic, which as Venusian Witches, we aren’t supposed to use.

The White Tide crown lay across the ravine behind us. It rose from the ground. The crowned shadow reached for it through Raiken’s body. I pulled the white wolf forward. Not fully. Just enough. Claws formed at my fingertips. White light spread across my skin. I drove my hand against Raiken’s chest. The shadow screamed. The pack recoiled. Black smoke tore from his mouth. It gathered above us, shaping itself into the false king. Shin threw his blade. The shadow caught it. Then laughed. You cannot kill blood.

Book 2: Crown of Shadows Chapter 1: The Departure The carriage door closed with finality that echoed through her chest like a death knell. Through crystal-clear windows enhanced with court magic far beyond territorial capabilities, she watched Shadoweave's spires fade into pre-dawn mist. Each familiar landmark disappeared with the inexorable permanence of choices that couldn't be unmade.

Its color was wrong, tinged with crimson, crackling with a vicious intent that made my wolf snarl. “Blood-fire,” Zylar hissed. “This is forbidden magic.” My heart pounded violently as I scanned the chaos. The flames still snarled viciously, but my eyes caught movement beyond the firelight. The shadow again! This time, the flickering blaze revealed more. A tall figure wrapped in a black cloak, the hem fluttering unnaturally fast as it slipped between houses at the edge of the courtyard. A sudden surge of panic overwhelmed me as without thinking, I chased after it.

Twice. Then shadows writhed upward like serpents, thick and alive. A sharp spark flared between their palms, electric and painful. Sierra flinched, but didn’t let go. Her skin prickled. The magic that surged through her veins wasn’t tame, wasn’t cooperative—it was dark, wild, terrifyingly familiar. The air thickened, heavy with pressure. Students whispered, their voices distant. The shadows leaned closer, curling around her ankles, reaching toward her chest. They knew her. They wanted her.

They lowered the rifle, and for the first time, I felt a flicker of unique, abyssal shadow magic emanating from them. It wasn't a human. The figure raised a hand, making a lazy 'come hither' motion before dissolving into a cloud of ravens and vanishing into the night. "They have a summoner," Nyx’s voice echoed in my mind from where she and Lucian were hiding in the nursery. “Mommy, it’s not just human steel. The shadows here... they obey someone else.” The war for Blackwood had just changed. The Silver Order was a distraction. The real hunter was already inside the house.

Lucky there’s nothing deep needing stitches. In my grieving and broken state, I begin to feel faint. I let myself go and pass out. Opening my eyes I feel myself transported into another realm. Standing in front of me is my grandmother’s house which stands in front of a looming property which I dare not go near. The “LeFleur” mansion. A place said to belong to my ancestors from centuries ago. A place that continues to haunt my dreams since a child. Something about this place calls to my soul, it pulls me and begs me to return. The house stands in the Normandy countryside. She feels it in the wind and air, she feels it in the depths of the earth, it’s as if a spirit like a piece of me is locke

The moment our hands linked, I felt it. Five different power signatures flowing together, weaving into something greater than any of us could achieve alone. Silver and shadow, ice and sound, kinetic force and flame—all merging into a symphony that made my bones vibrate with recognition. This was what Shadowborn magic was meant to be. Not isolated. Not feared. But collaborative. Beautiful.
