“I am sorry for not showing up that day when you asked to meet us. I had exams so I couldn’t make it.” I think the show on my face showed because she chuckled. “What the fuck are you talking about, why are you even here?” she couldn’t be one of the shadows, the one I met was on his late twenties judging from the way he looked. I could be wrong, and I had no way of finding out since he erased himself from government systems. “I am the second shadow. I have some news, I thought I should give you those and apologize for not coming when you called.”

She already had Sharon as a friend, and she’d be able to know if they had ‘friended’ each other. She found him easily from Sharon’s profile. There was a picture of them together on his last birthday, and he was tagged. She clicked on his profile. His main picture was of him in a pub somewhere, about to drink what looked like a Jager bomb. His cover picture was him and a group of friends, again at a bar. They all looked half-cut, and very young. She couldn’t see a lot of his profile because she wasn’t his ‘friend’, but he was tagged in other peoples posts that were set as ‘public’.

“They won’t wait passively.” As if on cue, her phone buzzed again. Unknown number. She answered. A male voice spoke quietly. “You’ve made yourself visible.” “Who is this?” “Someone who prefers discretion.” “Another of the Twelve?” A pause. “Careful,” the voice said. “Not all of us approved of that night.” Fracture confirmed. “Then help dismantle it,” she said. The line disconnected. She looked at Alexander. “They’re splitting.” He nodded slowly. “For fifteen years they operated in shadow,” he said. “Now they’re afraid of light.”

I have a contract to sign in order to prove Aunt Dolores wrong. The thought of wanting him in flesh excited me but then, I remembered Victor and released a sigh I didn't realize I was holding. My thumb shakes when I tap his profile. I've never looked before. I never needed to. The anonymity was the whole point. A shadow I could beg without consequences, without a name to haunt me after. The handle is still ShadowKing. The bio image loads first: a black wolf silhouette cut sharp against a glittering skyline at night. It looked familiar in a way that made my gut clench before my brain caught up.

Of course, she’d had so much coffee by the time she glanced up and smiled at the man she felt like a crackhead in sheep’s clothing. “Blue.” It took a great deal of effort not to vomit. He was completely plain-looking. No lips. Thick eyebrows. Nearly trimmed hair, Cropped. Clean-shaven. Peppered grey and black. A dead ringer for Richard. Or simply Richard himself. Blue stupidly hoped for the former. Wished he had some secret twin. A cousin he happened to resemble so closely. A doppelgänger. “Richard.” Bewildered, she begun to gather the portfolio she had gone to great lengths to lay out neatly. “I’m expecting someone, you have to leave.”

From where he was sitting, Roy picked up that it was a photo of him lying down. “Did you take a picture of me?” he murmured. Sierra shuddered and dropped her phone on the sofa. Roy’s eyes fell upon the phone screen, where a photo captured him reclining, his hand resting on the sofa, while Sierra leaned in, their poses suggesting an intimate embrace. Willow’s profile picture on the dialog box caught his eye right away. Sierra swiftly grabbed her phone and put it behind her back. “Roy, I-I…” Caught in the act, Sierra stammered for words.

he’d said, shaking his head. “She’ll adjust,” I replied tightly. “Sure,” Zayn chuckled. “And I’m the Pope.” Dinner was even worse. Alessia never missed an opportunity to jab me with her tongue, and Zayn sat there enjoying the show like it was a comedy act. After she stormed off again, Zayn leaned back in his chair, smirking. “She’s got fire. I like her.” “She’s reckless,” I muttered. “She’s alive,” Zayn countered. “Most women in our world are trained shadows. She’s a storm.”

Sharon didn't care to think beyond that. No sooner had she shared her contact with J than a friend request popped up. J had added her. She accepted it. Sharon glanced at J's profile—no posts at all. Someone who didn't know better might think they had been blocked. His avatar was a pitch-black circle, as if he hadn't even bothered to find a random online image. Perhaps sensing she might misinterpret, J sent a message: [Sorry, I don't usually post on social media. I never know what to say.]
