What I’d done. What I’d become. The others fanned out across the perimeter as we stepped into the Hollow. A ring of ancient stones marked the center, covered in moss and old runes, their edges worn smooth by time. Small braziers, still cold, lined the outer circle. The place smelled like damp earth and cedar, like the woods had claimed it completely. “This is it?” I asked. Lyra cast me a look that said she didn’t have the energy to sugarcoat anything. “This is the only place the shadows can’t walk into freely. If they want in, they’ll have to bleed for it.”

“Cael—” “Stay behind me.” A shape materialized ahead of them. Then another. And another. Three Hollowborn stepped from the shadows, tall and gaunt, their bodies shifting like liquid smoke. Their heads tilted in eerie synchrony, empty faces turning toward Lyra. They had no eyes, yet she felt them staring straight through her. The nearest one extended a long, crooked arm. Its fingers dripped tendrils of black mist that hissed when they touched the pavement. Lyra stumbled back. “No—no, no—”

Damien drove the rogue down, one knee in its chest, claws at its throat. “Say another word to her,” he growled, “and I will remove your tongue.” The rogue smiled up at him. “You cannot stop a door once it knows her blood.” The journal fluttered in my hand. Pages snapping hard enough to sting. Words appeared. THE HOLLOW CALLS WHAT THE HOUSE WAKES. My mouth went dry. “Damien.” “I’m busy.” “The haunted book has an update.” “Not ideal timing.” “Shockingly, the book did not ask.”

But none of them are what I need. Exhaustion stretches its fingers through me. I rub my eyes, dragging my palms over my face. I haven’t slept since before the claiming, and even then, it was more surrender than rest. But I can’t stop. Not yet. Not until I find something that will help Khael. My hand grazes another book tucked behind the larger volumes. It’s thin. Bound in dark blue fabric. No title. I slide it free. The first page contains only a title: The Curse of Hucow Hollow.

“Yes. That book holds knowledge of shadow-born entities, of spirits that can possess the living. If something has taken Varek, its name, its purpose, and its weakness may be within those pages.” Marek’s face paled. He shook his head, disbelief sharpening into anger. “You would dare open that accursed place again? You know what lies in the Hollow. I’ve seen it, Eloria. I’ve walked beneath its canopy of bones, felt the trees breathe against my skin. The ground itself shifts like it’s alive. Skeletons hang from branches like trophies, their jaws stretched in silent screams. The forest doesn’t welcome intruders — it consumes them. And you would drag us back there?”

The Edge of Shadows The Hollow’s whisper echoed inside John’s mind, twisting the world around him until it fractured like splintering glass beneath his feet. Darkness spilled from the edges of the cavernous pool, tendrils of shadow slithering toward his heart, suffocating and cold. Sarah’s fading form trembled weakly in his arms, and desperation surged like wildfire. “Hold on,” John’s voice cracked with raw emotion. “I’m not letting you go.” But the deeper they sank into the Hollow’s grasp, the more fragile Sarah’s presence became like a dying ember fighting a violent storm. The shadows seemed to seep into her skin, draining the warmth and life she once radiated.

Elsewhere still, also unnoticed, dusky shapes were gliding silently through the birches and oak trees of Shaw Woods, gaunt, ill-defined shapes, newly risen, gathering pace and cohesion, climbing along the ridge known to locals as Duck Blind Point, one of them—the revenant gripping an unclean Bible—fixing its dark sockets on Shaw-Meredith House above where a light shone in the arched windows. But somebody did notice a female form moving through leaves and on down to a fenced corner where a boy remained chained.
