Chapter One Hundred and Forty-One **** The Hollow came again tonight, after a failed trial last night. I felt it before I even saw it because the air around me changed, the shadows in my room deepened unnaturally, and the candle on my desk began to shake though there was no wind. I wasn't scared and I didn't call for Jason. I just sat up, wrapped in the quiet hum of our bond, and I waited for it. It rose from the floor in a smoke given form,taller than before, its edges frayed, its void-eyes sparking with something new, like confusion.

Shadows began appearing along the horizon, and the whispers increased. The smell of fresh flowers but none within sight, only grass. I followed the smell to an old oak tree. The bark was tough and rough as I held my hand against the trunk. It creaked and groaned as a door appeared in front of me in the trunk. Stepping through brought me home. But it didn't feel like home. It was cold, empty, with grayness overcast through it. Breath was visible in front of me as I took deep breaths. All light and love had sucked out of it. Aria stood in the alley, breathing hard, hands trembling. She looked down at her belly. “Mommy’s learning,” she murmured. “We’re going to be okay.” But that night, as she lay in bed tracing the stretch marks forming on her skin, a new scent drifted through the cracked window,faint, wolf, familiar. Hailey POV Darkness does not feel empty. It feels intimate. Close. Like breath against the back of my neck. When the shadow slams into my chest, I expect pain. Instead— I feel heat. Low. Spreading. Damn it, this wasn't an action movie. I growled at something very rude, fasted my M19 harder, and sprinted down the sidewalk on this side of the street. I never let our prey out of my sight for a moment. It was almost like a slalom. Again and again I had to avoid people and then I almost ran into a shelter. There was room for a handful of people in these small buildings. If you had to get to safety from a prole, you could run in there, seal the room and call the venators from inside via an emergency column.

It was quiet for a few minutes and he finally said, “Tilly and I have absolutely no secrets. People like you and me … we can’t be with just anyone. It’s either one night stands, fake short term relationships or nothing. You don’t just find a Tilly on every corner. I found a book that seemed nice and pulse-racing, Blood Brothers by Nora Roberts. I took it off the shelf and looked back at Ashton who was now holding Jack in his hands. I went to the till and paid for the book. We then went out of the shop and headed to the car park. When we got to the car park, I got in and took Jack from Ashton to remove him from the cover and place him back on the stand. It was around 5:30 pm so we still had some time before heading home. Ashton read that from my mind and then he went around the car, got in and sat on the seat next to mine.

Dismayed Trish didn’t bother to reply her she reached to open the heavy door. Connie moved to help her and they both started laughing at how heavy the door was. Leading the way, Connie went inside and the heavy door closed behind Trish with a loud thud that made them jump as they found themselves in a short dark hallway. Holding hands they moved inside and the place was empty and dimly lit with the only light and low sound coming from the bar. They walked towards the light hoping to find someone but the counter was empty. ‘What do we do now, this place looks dead to me and as you can see Emma is not here.’ Trish whispered desperate to leave, the place was making her uncomfortable.
