'Now, watch me. I kept my eyes on her as I watched a rippled flow through her body. It was like a wave of wolf started at her head and flowed down her body. She never changed or shifted, it was just as though that six inches of wave that moved up and down her body was the only part that shifted. My eyes widened and I gasped. The only time I had seen her do that was when she dodged away from Grandpa but it was always a body shift. This was incredible. “How…how did you…”

As though in a daze, I keep strolling towards the Shifter until I'm a couple of inches away. I hunker down, looking into the animal's body. There is no positive shape to it, however, it doesn't have the standard power that an ordinary Shifter would have. Rather than the splendor of a beast, its eyes contain the obscurity of an internal conflict. We keep on visually connecting, and I am unfit to split away.

By the time anyone looked, I lowered my hand again. Elder Mira was already moving and she stepped toward me quickly. “Are you alright?” she asked, placing a hand lightly on my arm. “I’m fine,” I said. She took the bottle from my hand smoothly, then she leaned in slightly, close enough that no one else could hear. “When you start feeling uneasy in your tummy,” she whispered, “ you have to shift immediately.” I frowned slightly. “What if it happens when it's not time?” “If you don’t shift when the uneasy feeling begins,” she murmured, “you won’t be able to shed it when it passes.”

“I was thinking of making fried rice for…” My breath hitched and I grabbed the edge of the counter for a second. My eyes stared forward as the twinge in my back passed. Taking a slow breath, I rolled my shoulders and cracked my neck. “Sky?” I smiled and shook my head. “My muscle just spasmed. I’m fine.” Her eyes narrowed and she got up, coming over to me. She put her hand on my forehead before pressing two fingers to my neck. “Your body might be starting the shifting process, Sky. You can’t just discount discomfort.”

But I blocked him out immediately. Usually when you shift, it helps with the healing process. But as soon as I shifted back I could feel that the swelling under my eye was getting worse. It hadn't healed. I thought that was a little strange. But I didn't really think too much of it. He got me a good one, and it was a direct hit. Plus, he's an Alpha. He's a lot stronger. I wasn't really surprised that it hadn't healed yet.

I had to, so he would win. I remember how they all sat there staring at me… utterly dumbfounded and confused.. even scared. They told me later that they’d never in any of their lives seen anything like it .. they’d never seen anyone shift so quickly, or without the medicine. They said usually the first shift is slow.. and each part of your body shifts one at a time. This happens for the first few times in fact. But for whatever reason… I did it all at once. Maybe that was the first sign that I was somehow different. I hadn’t thought about that in ages. But I’d always been a quick shifter. Even after that day the second and third times I shifted .. it was immediate.
