After my eyes were plucked out, I lay on the operating table with two empty sockets on my face, resembling that of a broken doll. Samuel Sterling felt no guilt. He picked up my eyes to examine them and praised them, saying, "Daeleen was right. These really are a beautiful pair of eyes! I promised you, Daeleen. I will make all your wishes come true." As the anesthesia's effect slowly wore off, I could not help but cry out in pain. Samuel finally turned his attention to me as if blaming me for interrupting his memories of Daeleen.

He was shifting. Shifting was when a wolf was most vulnerable, which was why shifting publicly during my Luna ceremony had such a large impact, because for a split second it meant we were deaf, blind, and immobile. It also meant that Elroy lost access to his aura. However, it wouldn’t last long.

But holding it required concentration that shattered when Morgan moved. "Maintain it while defending." Impossible. Every attack broke Elena's focus, eyes reverting to human. Morgan's patience never wavered, correcting technique with mechanical precision. "You're trying too hard. Partial shifting should be like breathing…automatic, unconscious. Stop commanding and start allowing." Hours passed. Elena managed to hold golden eyes for thirty seconds while stationary. Claws came easier, her hands shifting when anger spiked. So, I stayed. Hour four was the hardest. The urge to blink became a form of torture. My eyes felt like they were filled with hot sand. I learned to "micro-blink"—closing one eye while keeping the other fixed on the glass, then switching. It was a rhythmic, exhausting dance. Every time I slipped, even for a second, I would see its fingers curl over the edge of the medicine cabinet, or see its torso lean out of the frame like a man stepping through a window.

He tested softly, obviously sensing Brandon's withdrawal, but not pulling back himself. "Yeah, I bet you wish you could frighten me." Brandon returned scoffing, using bravado to act unfazed, looking at the Shifter and easily coming up with an answer for his odd behavior. "But I was really just surprised for a second. It's your eyes. Their quite stunning." Unconsciously Brandon reached out and caressed the space beneath the Shifters right eye. He didn't feel his skin beneath his fingertips, but he felt the heat. "Every time I've seen them they have been glowing slightly and the pupils are slit in long thin ovals..." Brandon began "....Are you always mad or something?"

I can still see but it’s like I have stepped away from directly behind my eyes, like I have stepped into a room behind them. Very good. Now this next part, it’s going to hurt at first. It’s going to be hard, but I need you to try to relax completely. We are going to shift. Are you ready? Yes. I can do this; I am ready to fully meet you.

Though her father had her train with a professional, making her shift over and over and over until the pain of it was almost non-existent, she still wanted a clear head. Dropping to her knees, she placed her hands on her lap and closed her eyes, willing the shift to manifest and take over. Her eyes reopened, the golden flecks of her hazel eyes practically glowing as she felt her muscles contract and expand. She groaned as all her bones went stiff, but exhaled a loud sigh of relief as they began to crack and reform into the essential shape.

Then they shrank back to normal as he slumped again. I didn’t move nor did I speak. I just watched. Another spasm hit and his bones shifted under his skin. I saw the outline change for a moment, then settle. His fingers curled like claws. Then they relaxed again. Sweat rolled down his face. His clothes stuck to him. I stepped back and grabbed gloves. My hands shook but I kept working. I took notes on a pad. I wrote down every change I saw, the unstable vitals. The dental shift and even the bone shift. It reads like a list of things that should not happen.

Lastly, I put my mouth back and start to breath both mentally and physically – focusing on warmth and healing. I’m breathing slow and deep when I hear a sigh and then tell-tale sound of bones moving and the sound of shifting start. My eyes fly open to see the she-wolf getting up, turning to her hands and knees and start to shift. Her wide blue eyes look at me with shock; her long dark red hair gives her some modesty as she groans with another contraction, rocking back and forth on her hands and knees.

She smiled, shaking her head as tears formed in her eyes “when was the last time you shifted?” My question seemed to catch her off guard as she turned around to face me, her eyes dropping to the ground as she feared my anger, a few tears hit the ground as they fell from her eyes. I sighed and took a step toward her, frowning when she flinched. Gently putting my finger under her chin, making her look at me, I leaned in, gently connecting my lips with hers.
