Shifting has to be one of the most horrible things, and every full moon is a curse, but with time I got used to going long days within shifting and only doing it when I decided to.”

His smile turned to one of concern and his face became serious. “What do you mean? You said you never got the shifting gene, so you can’t be seventeen.” My eyes widened at his words. That wasn’t what we were told in school. My voice started to come out shaky as thoughts began racing through my mind. “What are you talking about? That’s basic shifting. We learn that as children when we start school. If a Shifter has not transformed by their sixteenth birthday, then it means the shifting gene is absent, and they were cursed to live as humans.

I didn’t want to be that girl that doesn’t have a wolf.” I pulled away enough to look up at her. “I’ve lived that life. Last time I had Nix’s voice, but I wasn’t able to shift. Sienna, present... The thing about my life is that it feels as though I have lived many. From my torturous childhood, to the death of my pack, to being left alone for years. I've seen many things someone would barely see in 3 lifetimes let alone my miserable 1. The fact I'm still here still astounds me. 24 years old and all I've known is misery, distaste and cruel people.
