Vera deadpanned, then smiled when he laughed, really laughed, the kind that lit up his whole face and crinkled the corners of his eyes. She liked that sound more than she cared to admit. They fell into an easy rhythm after that. Nothing serious, nothing heavy, just snippets of stories, childhood mischiefs, and mutual teasing that felt like balm after everything that had happened. He told her about sneaking out of his boarding school with his friend and getting caught three blocks away because his friend had a weak bladder and needed to pee every twenty minutes. She countered with the time she’d raced an undercover cop in a stolen motorcycle and only escaped because he’d pulled over to answer

“No. I’ll spare your ears. But I can tell a bad joke instead.” She laughed, She rolled onto her side, facing me now. “Fine then. Let’s hear it. Make me laugh.” “You asked for entertainment. You’ll get it.” I blinked at her, surprised. “You actually want to hear it?” She nodded, smiling. “Alright.” I cleared my throat, keeping my voice low. “Why did the scarecrow win an award?” “Why?” “Because he was outstanding in his field.” There was a moment of silence, dead silence. Then Liora snorted, covering her mouth.

He made me laugh, a genuine, bubbling sound that felt good after the fear. “Your turn,” he challenged, when he finished. “Tell me a joke. “ Hey! It's okay! He's not mad at you.” Hannah cheered her up and Danielle nodded and smiled. “ Come on! Let's have our lunch!” Hannah encircled her hand over Danielle's arms. “ Okay. The room went dead quiet when I said I would take the prize, but that quiet did not last. A second later, laughter thundered through the air. Lily Smith was the loudest, doubling over with tears streaming from her eyes. "How else could she be the top seller?" she cackled. "A woman like her has to have skin as thick as a rhino." I ignored her snide comments and kept my cool. "Just to be clear," I said, "since the company so generously 'rewarded' me with bathroom duty, that's all I'll be doing for the next three days. Everything else is off my plate."

When my joke lands she tilts her head back to laugh, shaking her head as she looks at me. "You're ridiculous." She says. "You're smiling." I respond. She gives me that warm look again and I wonder what's going through her mind at this moment. "You got any other ones?" She asks and I wrack my brain for any other dad jokes. "Um... The circus lion ate the clown but didn't finish." I say. "Why?" She asks. "Because he tasted funny." I respond and Harper chuckles again. "More." She teases, but I just shrug.

They grabbed the snow off the ground and made snowballs. Then they hurled the snowballs at us. The snowballs exploded the moment they came in contact with our skin.
