Chapter 18: Collateral Damage POV: Jamie The silence at Black + Lane was louder than shouting. It wasn’t the productive hush of a team deep in flow, or the respectful quiet of professionals respecting boundaries. This was something heavier—thick, deliberate, the kind of silence that wrapped around you like smoke from a fire you hadn’t started but everyone assumed you’d lit. It clung. It followed.

The drive over to the apartment was filled with an uncomfortable silence. Unasked questions hung in the air like a thick fog. Beads of sweat prickled on the back of the drivers neck as he too was smothered by the tension in the car. "Mum, dad let's leave them alone." Mr. Vance and Kate smiled at me as they existed the room and left us alone. Alexis didn't look at me as she continued staring outside. I walked over to her and just stood there in silence rocking back and forth on the heels of my boots. She was dressed in one of those ridiculous hospital gowns with a cloth wrapped around her head so people wouldn't see that she'd lost her hair. "I love you and I need you to know how much before I go into that operating room," she spoke, finally breaking the unbearable silence. "You don't have to say it back to me because I know you still love her."

"There's nothing," he replied. "Alicia, has someone been talking to you? Did they lead you to a misunderstanding?" Charles kept his cool, but his right hand drifted to his leg, a dead giveaway that he was fibbing. He probably did not even notice he did it every time he lied. The weight that had been crushing my heart finally hit the ground with a thud. "What's going on here?" Emily appeared at the top of the stairs, her eyes darting between Charles and me, full of suspicion. The sight of the perfume in Charles's grip made her face go pale.

"You thought I was a fool?" She knew it was useless arguing him. "Why are you silent, couldn’t answer?"" "My silence means I am tired of fighting and there is nothing left to fight for, I am tired of explaining my feelings to you but now I don't have the energy to explain them, right now I am on a self healing process and I am trying to forget everything that I ever wanted from you, I have always adapted to the changes in my life and even now I'm going to adjust and I'm not complaining, I am just trying to move on gracefully with all my dignity, I will definitely return your money, sorry and thanks for everything.” with that she walked away tears clouding her vision, rubbing it with the back

"This hotel belongs to your uncle?" Nodding, he pillowed his head and lay on the floor, giving a click to the remote he held. The vault switched to a transparent top. "Here is where I speak to the silence, blame the world, and shed my tears." That somehow dimmed the glow hopping on her hand. She took a seat next to him. Under the soothing lights, his sharp facial features stood out even more, and so did his bottled loneliness. She understood the familiar silence. It was whispering, yearning to be heard after years of being ignored.

I raised my hands and saw the flash of silver. Hands caught mine, just shy of plunging the scissors right into Kyle’s face. “Whoa, whoa, hang on there,” Ronan pulled me back. “What’s wrong?” I seethed, but I couldn’t speak and of course Kyle was going to accuse me of being insane, and everyone would believe him because no one ever took the time to listen to someone who couldn’t speak. “She’s crazy!” Kyle said, “I didn’t do a damned thing!” I shook my head, furious.
