Ayana screamed, bolting upright, hands flying to her temples as the agony returned tenfold.
She clutched the edge of the cot, breathing hard, trying to ground herself in the present. The room was empty. Just her, the darkness, and the distant drip of water somewhere in the construction site. Her heart raced wildly.
But then, from behind her, low, grounding, impossibly real, a voice whispered:
“You cannot lock up the darkness.”
Ayana whipped around, eyes wide, scanning every shadow. “Who’s there?” Her voice echoed off the bare walls. No one. Nothing but unfinished concrete and hanging wires.
