I could feel the weight of it bearing down on him, see it in the tension of his body, in the way his breathing came in slow, controlled intakes of air like he was barely holding it together.
I reached for his hand without thinking, my fingers hesitating before touching his.
He flinched slightly at the contact, like he'd been jerked from some kind of trance.
"Simeon," I whispered. "Talk to me."
He turned to me then, and for the first time, something vulnerable stared back from his eyes.
Fear.
Real, raw fear.
"I can't," he whispered, barely audible.
A shiver ran down my spine as he spoke the words.
