CHAPTER ONE 1 BECAUSE OF THE skunk, they were marked from the beginning. It’d run out into the highway so suddenly that Richard Franklin had, in turn, run over it before he ever had a chance to brake. Startled, he jerked his foot off the gas pedal, feeling first the resistance and next the sickening give beneath his Bridgestone Firestones, and then the smell had hit. Richard and Katie glanced at each other, noses wrinkling. Franklin had resumed his speed, trying to get away from the invisible pungent wave as fast as he could. But it was already too late.

I decide I’ve done what I can, and I turn around and take off at full sprint through the forest, heading toward Stephen’s primary village. An hour or so into my run, I sense that Alpha Kane has troops nearby. I can tell by the scent and the way the air has shifted in the distance. I can’t really explain it, but I decide to change my course slightly. I run through a small meadow and out the other side when a strange smell hits my lungs. It’s skunk–and a lot of it. It smells like a group of skunks had a stink-sack squeezing orgy, and it makes me want to vomit.

To be honest, their idea intrigued me. The two of them looked at each other for a brief moment and then chorused, "We know someone." "Not revealing our sources are we?" They shook their heads in a nearly robotic motion which was a little creepy. I bent down so that I was somewhat within the same height range as them, placing my hand on my knees for support, "Here's the thing, skunk is a bad idea. I don't want the smell to rub off on me tomorrow if he doesn't get it out of him tonight. How about you think of another plan."

And I was the only person in Oakhaven who could see it. I ducked behind a dumpster as a black armored vehicle roared past the alley entrance. The sirens were everywhere now. I held my breath, pressing my back against the wet brick. I was seventeen, I had one day left until Selection Day, and I had just become the most wanted girl in the city. A shadow detached itself from the wall beside me. I gasped, ready to scream, but a hand clamped firmly over my mouth. "Don't make a sound," a boy’s voice whispered in my ear. He smelled like ozone and damp earth. "If you want to live, follow me."

On the way we hit traffic, while Gregory and Lanna were quite relaxed me and Acre were on edge, Acre was so bad his hand was on the door handle "Calm down guys it wont be long" Gregory said looking in the rearview mirror. As soon as the car stopped me and Acre lept out of the car ready to tear apart anyone who so much as looked at our mates wrong but as soon as I took a deep breath the sweet scent of the sun,sea,sand and icecream hits me causing me to stop in my tracks and from the looks of things Acre has caught the scent of his mate too.

The study was dark. He didn't turn on the main light. Just stood at the window with the city below. Quieter than daytime. This version of New York that only existed in these hours, still alive, still moving, but differently. Like the city had finally exhaled. He looked at it. Thought about Thursday evening. He thought about the handshake. About dark eyes holding, and the feel of her hand on his when they were introduced. He thought about what she studied. Olfactory neuroscience. The way scent bypassed conscious processing and interacted directly with neurological response.

He heard they were very painful and uncomfortable, so he happily took them every month. The scent neutralizers he took were also expensive because he put them on every day. He knew only Alphas could smell Omega scents, but he didn't want to risk people finding out he was an Omega, so he also needed money for that. It wasn't like he was poor; he just had enough to come by. He didn't complain about his life, and he was happy with the way he lived right now. Those few side effects couldn't keep him down.

I look around in the dark and find a small skunk staring at me, almost balefully as if I’m intruding on its territory. Knowing what I’m about to do, I wince but reach out and grab the skunk, curling it into a ball so it can’t release its odour on me. I run back down the path I just came for, out of breath as I push myself against my limits. Reaching the entrance of the forbidden section, I run further down the path, leaving my scent everywhere. I run for twenty minutes before backtracking, out of breath and holding the agitated animal in my arms. After reaching the entrance of the forbidden section, I release the skunk and hold my breath. Just as I expected, the animal releases its foul smel

It was time to try out something that R and D had been working on for Intercorp for a while. Owen slipped into his office and pulled out a small vial. The scent blocker would work for almost 24 hours, unless he got wet. According to the notes, if he got wet, he’d smell like a wet dog for another 24 hours, though he was almost certain that was a joke. Almost. Owen doused himself with the liquid and then slunk into the main hanger. There was a spot, just behind a forklift, where he could see nearly the whole airstrip without being seen.
