There’s a fountain in the circular driveway, water frozen mid-spray because it’s too cold for it to run. The car stops in front of the main entrance. The driver gets out, comes around to my side, opens the door before I can reach for the handle myself. “Thank you,” I manage, and my voice sounds small. He doesn’t respond, just nods and goes to the trunk to get my bag. I step out onto the gravel and the cold air hits me immediately, sharp enough to make my eyes water. I pull my jacket tighter around myself even though I know it’s not going to help much.

The darkest days are always before the morning. The early rain is a sign of dismay. The howling of evil birds filled our creeks on that specific dawn, howling the sound of tragedy innovating an evil omen.
