I whispered, "lock the door." Without a moment's hesitation, I burst through the back door, slamming it shut with a resonating bang that echoed in my ears. My heart raced as I clutched the splintering wooden handle defensively in front of me. Through the narrow window of the door, I caught a glimpse of Adam's panic-stricken face, pressed against the glass, his eyes wide. I stood there for just a heartbeat before my instincts kicked in, urging my feet to move further.

The sound was not the ordinary rattle of the metal door sliding along its tracks. It was the distinct, unmistakable snap of a physical trigger mechanism engaging.

The elevator dings and opens to a small hallway. It was a short hallway, and at the end of it, was a door that didn't even have a handle. It was one of those fancy sliding doors that could sense that there was a person in front that opened on its own. Then, I stopped right in front of it and it slid to the side.
