I didn’t touch it. I just sat there. Listening. Waiting. Like if I stayed close enough, I would hear her coming back sooner. I didn’t. Time moved slowly in that house. Too slowly. So I started walking around. Carefully. Like I didn’t want to break anything. Or make her regret bringing me. I didn’t go back into that room with the books. Even though I thought about it. A lot. Instead, I stayed in the main space. Sometimes I sat on the chair.

Not a scratch. Exhausted, we both collapsed to the ground, surrounded by ancient books. When I pulled the book from the flames, I realized it wouldn't leave my hand. It was stuck to my palm. "Micha—" He stepped closer, ready to help, but I shook my head. "Relax. A book can't hurt me." If only I knew. The book began to move on its own. The pages beat like a heart. Heat spread across my palm, burning my skin.

Fru's mouth rounded in disbelief as the ink in the book rippled beneath her gaze, words liquefying into an emerald glow. Fru's right hand rubbed her face, as the book glowed more fiercely, firm in its disobedience. Alive. Hungry. The courtyard melted away, swallowed by shadows and flame. Fru's eyes swerved overhead as she watched the leaves slow in motion. The scent of charred earth filled her nose, the air thick with heat.

The fire in the Alpha’s study burned low, a slow flicker that painted the room in gold and shadow. The scent of smoke mingled with parchment and ink, old leather, and faint traces of steel. Outside, the night pressed heavy against the castle walls, the wind whispering through the stone as though carrying secrets from the mountains.

"A story still being written." Silence. The floating lanterns drifted overhead. Soft golden light danced across the blank cover. The book shimmered faintly.

Heat surged through me, blooming in my chest and creeping slowly into my cheeks as I shifted in my seat, subtly clenching my thighs together. He swung his arm through the air, sending fire in a blazing arc that struck the shelves. The books shrieked, blood hissed, and their pages curled black, turning ash. The menu popped up, and I chose to delete the book from my homepage. A notification popped up at the center of the screen. [Are you sure you want to delete the book? This process is irreversible.] I clicked confirm. The progress bar completed in a flash, and the book vanished without a trace from my homepage. Ding! My phone lit up. I received a text.
