I said, grinning from teeth to teeth like a child. We walked into the library. It looked like it had been a while, since it was in use. I picked it immediately, and started going through it. After a while, I noticed I wasn't hearing any sound from the cook. I looked around and found her wiping tears off her eyes with the hem of her apron.

Luca looked amused but followed without protest. Inside, the air smelled of old paper and dust. Stacks of books filled every corner, and a sleepy cat dozed on the counter beside an elderly woman who greeted us with a kind smile. Even as a child, I can't imagine he would have been small or careful enough to read it. Gently, as if lifting a rose from a vase, I pick up the blush pink volume, marveling at the delightful texture of its silk binding, the title embroidered in gold. While I might not know many words yet, I know enough that I can read the title of this book.

Simply. He sat in his own chair. He opened the library notes. The June light moved through the room at its long late angle and the city held its warmth and the practice continued in the only way it could — in the small things, in the daily giving, in the cup of tea carried without being asked to the person at the desk.
