I stood in the middle of the living room, facing the security camera's blinking red light, practicing my smile again and again. Looking into the lens, I spoke softly, like I was leaving a message for the Mom who'd watch it someday. "Mom, look. I practiced the perfect smile again today. "Lift the corners of my mouth fifteen degrees and show eight teeth. The books say that's the most sincere smile. The one that makes people feel warm. "I've practiced so much my face hurts... but that's okay. "When you watch this tomorrow... will you tell me I did a good job? "Will you finally believe I wasn't lying to you?"

I faked a smile, though I couldn't stop digging my nails against my palms. "What's the matter?" Then, Atlas appeared next to me. His hand immediately found its way to my waist. "Nothing. We were talking. Well, I was kind of assuring them." I faced him, still having that shitty fake smile I could never perfect. Loonie faked a cough. "That's just it, huh. Love indeed works in mysterious ways." It was followed by a faint chuckle. I felt Atlas softly squeezed the side of my waist, making the fake smile I made totally fell off my face and was replaced by a raw hearty one. A ghost of smirk was playing on his lips as he tore his gaze off and shifted it to the elder couple in front of us.

I mean, look at the cheesy letters I send you. ( I smacked my forehead again. I hope this isn't going to be a regular thing for me). And I have a little assignment for you. She delicately places it upon my head fiddling around with my hair. "Thank you little one." I smile at her. A genuine smile, she made me content. This little gesture brought peace to my heart. My smile disappears to the sound of a click from a camera. I look to the side, Ragon with his phone pointing at me, mouth open and Deimos by his side, just staring at me with some sort of yearning. I bow my head down, a fervent blush creeping up my cheeks.

They're too caught up in the show. Smile. That pull again. Subtle. Sneaking. Soft as poison in tea. I attempt to pucker my mouth, but it smiles anyway. A delicate, doll-like smile that is not mine. I hate it. I hate it. But the applause only grows stronger. Louder than my beating heart, louder than the scream welling up the back of my throat. The groom doesn't look at me.

He grinned. "How am I sure you're not trying to poison me? Perhaps that's what you're actually after. To kill me..." He ignored me, staring at Kim. "And you are?" "Kim." He offered his hand. "I suppose you're heathy's new assistant?" James didn't utter a word. He only smiled. "Then I guess we might be seeing, often..." "I guess so." Kim said, turning around to leave. "I'll be waiting at the meeting."

A welcome change from the damp, expected mustiness. His smile was one of the things that first captured my heart. It wasn't about technical perfection, though the way his dimples winked and his teeth flashed white certainly didn't detract. It was the way it transformed his entire face, crinkling the corners of his eyes with genuine warmth.
