His eyes were fixed on Alex, dark and narrowed, his jaw clenched so hard I could see the muscle ticking. The easy, charming hubby from this morning was gone. In his place was a man who looked ready to throw a punch. Alex, to his credit, just smiled calmly, though I noticed the way he took a small step back. “No harm meant, man. Aurora and I are just friends. I’ve told you that many times.” Charlie let out a low, humorless chuckle that sent a chill down my spine. “Friends who text every single morning? Charlie utters more of a statement than a fact. “That relationship is one of friendships, Charlie. We are just friends,” I say forcefully. Charlie’s eyes are the brightest blues, and she stares at me, as if that would change the thoughts I had just said. Nothing more than friends. “I’m going to get more cookies,” she says, standing. “We shouldn’t eat any, our tummies will hurt us,” I try to convince her. “Don’t be a loser, Lettie. It’s just a couple of cookies more,” she explains turning to leave.

I was taken aback so I pushed him away. "Charlie and I have been close friends for years, Mr. de Guzman. I am one of the sole witnesses of his life. I never saw him smile again until he met you." He replied, his cold voice turned profound. Never saw him smiling, huh? That is not the case for me, though. Ever since I met Charlie, I always noticed him smiling at me, and I thought it was in his nature to keep on doing that. "Did he tell you about our secret?" I asked him upfront.

But although his face is friendly, there is a devious gleam in his blue eyes. "Did you look at my messages?" I ask. "I sure did..." Caleb admits. His chest is now inches from my face, and he tilts his head, seeming to find the height difference amusing. I swallow thickly while craning my neck. "And what did you find?" "Plenty of things... It's gone. The forest floor beneath us becomes an uncomfortable cushion, and I break the silence with a light-hearted comment. Amelia pulls back, her eyes reflecting genuine remorse before she chuckles like I’m the funniest joke she’s ever seen. Leave it to Amelia to turn situations around in seconds. I was a few moments away from bawling my eyes out at losing my best friend, and now I’m going to smack her if she doesn’t get up.
