ELENA’S POV
The smoke was everywhere now, thick and black and choking, filling the hallway like poison gas. I pressed my sleeve over my mouth and nose, trying to breathe through fabric that was already saturated with the acrid chemical smell. Gasoline smoke. It was different from wood smoke—sharper, more toxic, burning my lungs with every breath. The heat was rising fast, radiating through the walls, turning the hallway into an oven. Sweat ran down my face, stinging my eyes.
