She stepped closer, her perfume mixing with the faint scent of smoke. She pulled a cigarette from her robe pocket, lit it with a practiced flick, and took a long drag. The tip glowed orange in the dim light.

“Never smoked before, huh? Well. Looks like I get to give you something else new.” “Why do people smoke, anyway? I mean, you always see these TV ads saying how dangerous smoking is, with lung cancer and all that, and . . . ” He stopped, worried he was rambling, spewing his guts everywhere, and maybe he would somehow offend her in his babbling.

I hold my breath as the burning acrid smell fills my lungs, doing my best not to cough. The smoke tightens into an impenetrable coil that blocks out any glimpse of what could possibly be inside. And then, all of a sudden, the smoke clears away. “What is this?” I gasp out in horror.

“Care to join me?” I shook my head, taking a step back. “No, thank you. I don’t smoke.” He raised an eyebrow, amusement flickering in his expression. “You drink, but you don’t smoke? Interesting.” I stiffened but kept my voice even. “I don’t drink all the time. Just…when I’m in a mood.” His grin widened as he tapped ash from the cigarette. “Ah, I see. We have something in common, then. I only have my brown cigarettes when I’m moody too.”
