For the first time in my life, I kind of glad for my petite frame that I could fit into this space. The smell of dust wafted into my nostrils, trickling into my nasal passageway and threatening to cause me to sneeze. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, pinching the bridge of my nose tightly. I keep on repeating a silent mantra on my head—please don’t sneeze, please don’t sneeze, please don’t sneeze. That until the trickling sensation of my nose has subsided, letting me sigh in relief.

“Don’t do that again. Please. I don’t like it when you fall down and everyone runs over. Hospitals are scary.” “I’ll try my best not to,” he said softly, rubbing her back with his free hand. “You were really brave tonight, you know that? Sienna told me you listened to all her Mr. Flopsy stories and even laughed.” Lily nodded but still wouldn’t let go. “She’s the best storyteller. Mr. Flopsy saved the day with carrot cake. He told the carrots they had to behave or no more baking. Can Sienna tell me more stories tomorrow?”

I kind of have a problem with germs. “No, I will...” she sneezed, “I just need to rest...” another sneeze.“I will be fine,” she wheezed. He then, or course made it his mission in life to make me snort. I hated snorting, but I loved how hard it made Aiden laugh when I did. Once he started laughing at my snort, I would laugh even harder, causing me to snort again, and the two of us would be lost to an unending laughing loop until we couldn't breathe. My ribs ached and my face was sore, but I had never been so happy in my entire life.

I clasped my hands and put them on my chest,extended my legs,keeping them together and inhaled deeply. A bug went up my nose. My eyes flew open and I did a pretty good impression of an elephant blowing it's trunk.I gaged,sneezed and coughed until I dislodged what seemed to be a very irritated fruit fly.I rubbed my nose as it flew around my head cussing me out."You think I liked having you up my nose pal?"It probably gave me the finger then went on it's way. "Oh,this is ridiculous"

The bitterness burned in my nose, causing me to sneeze. I wiped snot on the back of my paw and waited for the man to leave the window, hoping he would forget to shut it. Opening doorknobs with paws was not an easy thing to do. Jumping a two-story building, on the other hand, was easy peasy.

Ches whines from beside me, finally taking a bite of her food, her eyes glinting with mischief. "Someone said he tipped you over in front of everyone, only to catch you in one arm and kiss you senseless, in the middle of the hallway before the principal came and chased you all off to class." I burst out laughing at her detailed and very exaggerated explanation, not for once doubting that someone had said something like that. Narratives change and stories most times lose their facts from being retold so many times within these walls that I don't even bother with them, so yeah, no surprise there at all.

~CAKE~ By noon, I was convinced my lungs were trying to leave my body. I sneezed for what felt like the hundredth time, barely managing to grab a tissue before it became a disaster. My head throbbed behind my eyes, my nose was blocked and running at the same time, and every time I coughed, it felt like my ribs were protesting. Sienna stood at the foot of my bed with her arms crossed. “Normal people swim during the day,” she said.

“I didn’t think it would happen again.” “What triggered it this morning?” Mom asked, softer now. Jess hesitated, then sighed. “I woke up early and decided to clean my room. You know that old box of winter clothes I keep under my bed?” Mom frowned. “The one full of dust?” “Yeah. That one.” “I pulled it out and was sorting the clothes. I started sneezing a little at first,” Jess continued. “But I ignored it. Then I sprayed that lemon cleaning stuff because the room smelled weird, and I guess the dust and the fumes just… hit all at once.”

I wrapped the scratchy hotel blanket tighter around myself and ignored the ache in my back from the tile. I told myself I was fine. That this wasn’t so bad. That frostbite was better than sin. Then I sneezed. Just once. Then twice. Then I kept sneezing. Repeated, messy, pathetic little explosions of breath that I tried to stifle but failed miserably. It was like my immune system had finally joined in the sabotage. Like my body had taken Stephano’s side.
