woman? "Kiss me back, please," he pleaded in a soft voice.

She hummed faintly under her breath, barely audible, more habit than intention. The sound seemed to help. The baby's small fists unclenched slightly, the frantic energy of the crying beginning to ebb. Behind her, Zoe shifted her weight slightly before speaking again. "Pete," she called in a softer tone. Her voice suddenly carried a hint of sadness, though it sounded strangely forced. It was the kind of softness that appeared only when an audience was present, carefully measured and deliberately placed. She stood up from the couch and turned to face him fully.

My throat suddenly felt dry. "Hi." My voice came out softer than usual. It barely sounded like me. "I need your help."

I squeeze harder. “Where. Is. She?” He was grunting and turning purple, but he still wouldn't beg. I knew he wouldn’t but I’d be grateful if he just dropped dead—but that would be too easy. Too quick. Then I heard it. “Put him down.” The voice is Soft. Low. Not a threat. Not a plea. But enough to freeze me where I stand. I let him go. He crumples, gasping and coughing, but I don’t look at him anymore.

A man's voice. Breaking.

Quiet. Certain. ⸻ “…I like that better.” ⸻ They stayed on the phone longer than usual. Nobody wanted to hang up. Eventually— he quietly said— “You should sleep.” She smiled. “…you first.” His laugh. Then— “Annoying.” Silence. Then— very softly— his voice. Warm. Gentle. Not overwhelming. Just real. ⸻ “…goodnight.” Pause. “…I love you.” Her chest softened.

The softness of his voice? Damn! This is not good.

Then, voice softer than usual: “…Yeah. He does,"

“And I’m guessing you heard enough to be very, very stupid… or very, very brave.” His voice was lower now. Softer. The kind of softness that carried weight.
