Wildfire and Ice

Wildfire and Ice

"You don't have to carry it alone. That's the thing you haven't learned yet. You've been carrying things alone for so long you've forgotten there's another option." He looked at the city. At the lake sitting on its horizon in the darkness, enormous and patient. He thought about six years of carrying things alone, about the architecture of isolation he had built with the same thoroughness he built everything else, about the specific relief of the terrace and her hand turning over in his and the warmth of her shoulder against his in the spare quiet of the safe house. "I'm learning," he said. She was quiet for a moment. Then, softly: "I know you are."

Dead Weight

Dead Weight

LUS has been so constant that Maya stops noticing it in the same way people stop noticing their own heartbeat, until the heartbeat develops commentary and begins pointing out that lunch was six hours ago. Now there is nothing. The quiet is total. Strange. And, Maya realizes with a small internal drop, entirely hers. For the first time since she came back, she is alone inside her own head. She has forgotten how. Apparently solitude is a skill, and hers has expired through lack of use. She does the morning. Gets dressed. Checks the watch report. Answers three questions about fuel, two about water, and one from Aaron about whether a complaints box can submit a complaint against itself.

The Alpha's Rejected Luna and Her Secret Heir

The Alpha's Rejected Luna and Her Secret Heir

A room with a low ceiling and a fire in it and rain on the shutters, in a country that has not existed for two hundred years. A woman in a doorway with her hair down. A frozen river with a hundred people standing on it. A great deal of arithmetic, going on and on, the same sum in different orders, forever. And under it, right down at the bottom, my mate, working. She is not screaming. She is not fighting. She is doing what she has done in every drowned woman in this mountain, which is to go down and down and down through everything until she finds the one small thing at the middle, and I can feel her descending, patiently, hour after hour, through three hundred years of a dead man's furnitur

My Alpha Lost Me To The Lycan King

My Alpha Lost Me To The Lycan King

"You don't have to carry this alone anymore. I know it's the only thing you've ever known, four centuries of solitary duty, but I promise you, there's another way. Let us help you." For a long, agonizing moment, nothing happened, Solveig's chained form remaining silent and unresponsive, the black corruption continuing its slow, hungry spread through the chamber's amber walls. Then, faint and trembling, her eyes opened, gold-flecked and ancient despite the youthful face that held them, and when she finally spoke, her voice carried four centuries of exhausted, aching loneliness compressed into a single, desperate question. "Is it truly possible," she whispered, "to set this down, after so very

Married For Revenge, Pregnant With His Regret

Married For Revenge, Pregnant With His Regret

A statement of what was coming. "Tomorrow," I said. He left. I closed the door. I stood on the other side of it in the quiet of my kitchen and I pressed my back against the wood and I closed my eyes and I let myself feel, for the sixty seconds it required, everything I had been organized against feeling for seven years. The loneliness of the east wing. The notebook dropped in the bin. The folder slid across the table. The one suitcase and the eastern window and the city still dark. And underneath all of that, older than all of that, the river. The cold water and the burning lungs and the small boy who had looked at her like she was the whole world and the girl who had understood, for one bri

The Dark Silhouette

The Dark Silhouette

It was better for me to die, rather than to rot in this cruel world. I have given up on the friendship obsession since then. My faith and perception towards humanity drastically changed that I had completely isolated myself and found my own tranquility and solitude in remorse and sorrow. I had been swept away in my own space that I had begun to search what my purpose in life was, if there is. I had learned to embrace all the solitary moments I could possibly get just to survive, and to feel alive, even for the last time.

Alone

Alone

It makes me feel so vulnerable. Being alone also means being stuck with my dark thoughts. What if my family is here? What will they do after not seeing me for five years? They may not have been here physically but they've disrupted my sleep almost every night I've been away from them. I don't think I could handle seeing them again. I'd rather die than be tortured for not doing the smallest things. I can't do that again. I won't do that again.

Subduing The Mafia Don

Subduing The Mafia Don

The smell of her own body and urine filled her nostrils and it disgusted her beyond words. She couldn't do this anymore. This feeling of hopelessness was eating her up from the inside but she just didn’t know what to do about it. She had been mainly left on her own, tied to one place since she got here. it drove her crazy, the solitary, not being able to communicate with other humans or do anything except stare at the bare walls, she could slowly feel herself go crazy as the days went by.

As the moon began to rust

As the moon began to rust

It was of the forced, commanded, unbearable sort, which you got lost in, as you couldn't leave it even when you desperately needed someone. Chosen solitude is a luxury. Very different from this one: a reclusion that held you captive in sarney days and endless emptiness. Something was missing. Something more than just the human touch. It was missing in the streets, the flats, in people's faces. Most of the time, no one saw anyone, but when they did they saw it in each other's eyes. A lack of life, lack of freedom, lack of meaning. Lacking future, and - in the year of longing - some had even given up on longing, because it was too painful.

Nursing the Murderer Alpha King

Nursing the Murderer Alpha King

“Anyone. In a long time.” I look out the window. I know, is what I don’t say. I know, because of the house with no warmth in it, and the one chipped mug, and the rooms that were empty until last night, and the way you stood outside the window of something warm like you’d forgotten you were allowed in. I know the shape of that kind of alone. I’ve been living inside a quieter version of it for eight years. “Dante,” The car swerves.
