Whenever she looked at me she had a shy smile on her face where I lost all my sanity in her.

The book was published. --- The reviews arrived across March and April. The editor sent them—the ones she gathered, the significant ones, the ones that she thought Don should see. She sent them by post, each review clipped from the publication, each with a brief note in her handwriting indicating which publication it came from and whether she thought Don would find it useful. She did not send every review. She sent the substantial ones, the ones that engaged with the argument rather than simply announcing the book's existence. Her I*******m was opened and yes, the I*******m page was sitting right there with a total of two million followers and zero following. "Nat...this is huge." I breathed. Your favorite book critic is basically someone who accepts read requests from random people and then she reads the book and drops both the good and bad reviews about the book. Sometimes the bad outweighs the good and vice versa. "I know." She answered. "Why didn't you tell your brother?" I asked her.

She stared at the phrase. Chris stepped closer again. “That’s standard language.” “Standard now,” she said. He didn’t argue. She set the phone down carefully, as if it might break. “How long will that review take?” she asked. “It depends.” “On what?” “On him.” She looked at the laptop screen, then at Chris. “I don’t like not knowing.” “I know.” She studied his face for a moment. “You’re calm,” she said. “I’m trying to be.” “For me?”

She said. Wait, did she see the witch too? "What did you see?" I asked, just to be sure. "You seemed very relaxed and expectant of what had occurred today." She replied. Phew. "Buzz off. I'm busy. I don't have time for hideous girls like you." I said to her. "Don't judge a book by its cover." She said and left. What a weirdo. And why is she doing a background check like that? Is she that obsessed with me?

I asked impatiently. “Honest review or just what you would like to hear?” She asked. Gosh, what was wrong with Carmen? Was she always this infuriating? I could barely deal with her, and yet, I didn’t want this to end. “Honest review,” I said. “As my manager,” I added quickly just so that she wouldn’t be getting any ideas in her head. And more importantly, I didn’t even want her to know that I was enjoying her presence and chattiness…minus the questions anyway.

Something about the way her name looked—familiar, though I couldn’t place it. “Of course, I’ll review this,” I said. I kept my tone light, casual, though a strange sense of wariness had settled over me. “Thank you for bringing it by in person.” She nodded, but then she did something small, subtle, that immediately put me on edge. Instead of handing me the paper and stepping back politely, she leaned just slightly forward, her eyes scanning the boutique as if she was memorizing every detail. “You’ve done a beautiful job here,” she said. “It’s… quite personal. It has a lot of character. I can tell this boutique is very important to you.”
