A voice called out. Ren turned. Standing on a rooftop opposite him was Jax. The glitch-kid looked stronger now. His avatar was stable. He held a glowing blue sword that looked like it was made of pure data. "Jax," Ren said, uncloaking. "What is happening?" "The Awakening," Jax said, gesturing to the marching NPCs below. "Your code cut their strings, Ren. They stopped following the Admin's script. Now, they're building their own." "Where are the players?" Ren asked. "Where are the regular users?"

Behind her came a group of reinforcements from our pack, their eyes darting warily around the gathered Awakened. “Aurora!” Lily called out, slightly out of breath. “I brought the book from your room, and several others I thought might be relevant. There's so much we need to decipher.” As Lily approached, I felt a strange pull coming from the center of the clearing. My eyes were drawn to the altar where the Awakened had been performing their ritual. There was something there, something hidden… Without fully understanding why, I walked towards the altar. Who on earth was knocking on my door at this time? Reluctantly, I forced one eye open and reached for the clock beside my bed. The moment I saw the time, I froze. It was five in the morning. I stared at it. Surely that couldn’t be right. It was too early. Another knock sounded before I could convince myself that the clock was broken. “Aria.” I instantly recognized the voice. It was Rowan. My eyes widened. Why was Rowan awake at five in the morning? And more importantly, why was he waking me up?

Waiting for something that may never come. My wolf should have come by now. Everyone said so. But she hadn’t. And maybe she never would. I closed my eyes. A single tear slid down my cheeks. Maybe I truly was Pathetic. But then I sensed the distinct smell again, it hit me like a tidal wave, knocking the air from my lungs. My knees wobbled, my hands went instinctively at my knee as my senses exploded. That scent—gods, it wrapped around me, inside me. It felt like coming alive. Like being seen and claimed.

Wooosh, the clock restarts and everything in my wake is thrown wide like the after implosion of a nuclear bomb. Sierra, Radar, the bullet and Juan are all catapulted away from me with force. Flying into a chaotic crash landing of limp bodies against the far wall behind the bed, taking a pillar and the canopy with it, in a crashing chorus of thuds and growls. It’s a monumental fallout from something that I didn’t mean to deliver so viciously.

Staring at the body before me, my mind went completely blank. Then, my phone suddenly rang with a strange ringtone. The screen lit up, and a single line of text appeared: [Can't believe you actually killed him. Don't just stand there! The cops will be here in ten minutes.] It wasn't a text message. It wasn't any app interface I recognized. They were just black letters on a white background on my screen. And the alert tone… it was strange, unlike anything I had ever used.
