Rowan grabbed my hand, but as he did, his arm began to flicker, turning into a translucent blue ghost again.
"Lyra, the tether!" he yelled. "He’s breaking the link!"
I looked at my wrist. The blue band was turning a violent, terminal red. Across the clearing, my son no longer an infant, but a tall, shadowy figure with a crown of thorns stepped out of the white light.
He didn't look at Julian. He looked at me, and his mouth opened to reveal a row of teeth made of pure, uncompressed data.
"Mother," the shadow-son said, his voice a distorted chorus of a million dead Omegas. "Choose. The mate or the machine. You can only save one file."
