Sebastian demanded. "Why infect yourself just to die in a cage?" Miller smiled through bloody teeth. "I am not a soldier, Sterling," he wheezed. "I am a... flare." Miller’s body began to glow brighter. The blue blood pooling on the floor hummed with a strange, high-pitched frequency. It wasn't a biological reaction. It was a Sonar Ping. Sent directly through the ice.

"Valerius! Do something useful!" "Fine," the vampire muttered. He lifted his bamboo flute to his lips. He didn't play a melody. He blew a single, piercing note that was beyond human hearing. The specific mineral property of the quartz wasn't just refracting the frequency. It was shattering it — breaking the wave pattern into its constituent components and reflecting each one back along a different vector, the components reassembling in the open valley below the gorge as something that bore no resemblance to the coherent signal the cannons had sent.
