Yanked the door open.
“Out,” he barked, his voice not loud but firm enough to scare her.
The woman let out a startled scream. The child began to cry.
“I don’t want to hurt you—get out, now!”
She scrambled from the car, dragging her kid. Chris jumped in, slammed the door shut, and sped off.

The stolen Honda rattled as Chris sped through backroads, taking sharp turns with zero regard for traffic laws. The sun had dipped low, casting everything in the heavy orange of dusk. He could hear sirens behind him still—faint, but searching.
