A howl of anguish hurtles into the air, but I don’t bother turning around, as Xander’s voice surfaces through the mindlink. “Go to Charity,” he calls. “We’ll cover you.” His promise pushes me to go harder and faster. Cresting the top of the hill, I slow taking in the scene of the town square below. Chaos ensues, as smoke billows out of buildings, wolves and humans fighting everywhere. I ignore the screams of pain and dying mates to the back of my mind. Scanning the field frantically, I search the crowd for Charity, until I find her and Elle in the farthest corner, fighting in human form.

“Charity was using me all along, then? She couldn’t bag the alpha, so she went for the next best thing.” Charity is a conniving bitch from hell. I can’t believe I was so stupid to fall for her antics. I was about to tell Xachariah about Xeraphina and me when ‘Uptown Funk’ by Bruno Mars started blasting away. My ears pop because the music is way too loud, so I run over to turn the speakers down. As I’m walking back towards Xachariah, I’m hit full force with Xeraphina’s scent. Glancing up, I see her and Tilly bobbing their heads to the beat, with their intertwined hands in the air as they enter the space.

She dialled it curiously, and the person picked almost immediately. "Feels illegal to see you call me, son" Master X's voice filtered in, and her eyes widened.

The idea that a virtual stranger could do that to her, could make her nearly frantic with need, did not please her. Maybe there’s something in the air, she thought suspiciously, taking a discrete sniff. Maybe it’s not me at all, but something to do with that thing he calls me. What was it, a charmer? Glancing at him out of the corner of her eye, she asked, “What is this charmer business about, anyway?” He looked at her; obviously surprised she would choose to speak to him. He took a moment to answer. “A charmer makes men want her. It’s the special pheromone she produces that makes the Haunt male wild.”

I say. I look up to see another figure behind Alpha Mayhem. She is a tall, beautiful woman. Her skin is dark, just like her hair. Her eyes are almost black. She is beautiful. "Can I be included?" she asks. She places her hand on Alpha Mayhem. The two of them belong together. It is obvious. "Fallon, this is my mate, Charis," Alpha Mayhem says. Charis walks toward me, and that is when I notice her fangs. "Vampire?" I ask.

“I want us to start all over again. No revenge plans, no Lydia, only me and you.” Her grin spread. “Sounds good.” I stretched my hands towards her. “Hi. I am Xavier, the Alpha of the Black Ridge pack.” She shook my hands. “Hi. I am Charlotte and it is really nice to meet you.” We both let go of our hands and continued our meals. A few minutes later, we finished our food. I cleared the bills and we both stepped out. Charlotte paused suddenly. “I need to use the restroom. I will be back in a minute.”

Jacob and Josh eye Lycer only for a moment before going into a defensive position. I lift my hand, gently laying it on Xavier's back. "Xavier, this is Lycer." His growl stops and I let out a breath of relief. "Stand down," he instructs the guys as well as several more of our wolves who emerge from the next tree line. "Charlie, see to his injuries." 'I'm fine,' Lycer sends through the proximity link.

Xavion was burning in savage fury, and as his eyes met Charlies, he barked with the authority of a man who was not to be crossed, “I told you to open the door just now! Why didn’t you open it?!” Charlie said in exasperation, “I don’t even know you. How would I know who you are? I don’t believe in anyone but the police in such an emergency!” Xavion said menacingly, “I am Xavion Fox from the Fox family! Have you ever heard of my name?”
