His voice was loud enough to cut through the sonic boom. I looked up. From the hangar bays of the flagship, a swarm of black shapes dived toward us. They weren't drones. They were "Sky-Eaters"—bio-engineered wyverns with jet turbines grafted into their wings. The Council's answer to air superiority. One of them, a beast with a wingspan of forty feet and a jaw full of spinning saw-blades, locked onto us. It shrieked—a digital-organic scream that made my blood run cold.

"You still think Skye's just some regular programmer?" Edward's tone was sharp with disbelief. "She's a top-tier hacker I managed to bring back through old connections! Letting her date you back then was me doing you a favor." Julian froze for several seconds, stunned speechless. When he finally found his voice again, it was full of incredulity. "Her?!" "Yes, her!" Edward barked, his patience gone. "Skye was the best match I could've arranged for you, and look what you've done! You went and got another woman pregnant—what a disgrace!"

Alexei's fingers closed around my wrist, not to stop me but to turn my attention to the blade he had finally pulled free, wrapped now in cloth soaked through with black fluid that should not have come from any wound this fresh. "Soul Eater," he said. "I have only heard of it in old warnings, never seen it used. It does not poison the blood. It poisons the space between heartbeats. Silver flame heals flesh. This is not flesh anymore." "Then what stops it?" "I do not know if anything does."

Carter POV. I watch as the tank is lifted higher as the ceiling opens up and see a helicopter hovering above; the chains attached to the tank and the helicopter. I run and leap, my claws digging into the concrete to pull myself up again. “ASTERIA!” I scream as I reach the opening and the ceiling starts to close. I climb faster to get to her, my claws digging into the concrete with each movement. When I hear her shriek just as the ceiling closes, I scream and punch it. I was too late. I need to get her. She will die otherwise.

Looking up at the sky with the sad smile plastered on his face he spoke up, "Why so hatred for me, ya Rab?" Miles away from him the girl with a cuddling baby in her arms uttered looking up at the sky, "I express my deep gratitude to Y ou for sending this angel to me, Ya Rab."
