Focused. “Feyrala.” A pulse of light exploded from my palm, hitting the target dead center. It shook, but didn’t break. “Again.” We ran through spell after spell. Arqessa for shielding. Zariel for light blades. I mastered the simple ones fast. It was the advanced spells that pushed me.

It wasn’t trying to control me; it was remembering itself through me. I’m used to drawing from my own magic and directing it however I see fit, but channelling my baby’s magic isn’t something I’ve had a lot of experience with. I close my eyes and instead of focusing on the electricity moving through me, I focus on the connection between me and the baby. I clear my mind, anchoring myself as I try to feel where the baby’s energy melds with my own. The more I focus on it, the more I sense the deep tether that ties our essrams to one another.
